Level 12 · Lesson 7

പ്രത്യക്ഷവും പരോക്ഷവും
Direct and indirect speech

ഉദ്ധരണിചിഹ്നവും 'എന്ന്' എന്ന നിപാതവും; കഥനത്തിൽ കാലം മാറ്റേണ്ടതില്ല.

Quotation marks, the quotative എന്ന്, and why Malayalam never shifts the tense.

ഓർക്കുക · You already know this

You reported other people's words back in level 5: അവൻ നാളെ വരുമെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു, ബസ് വന്നോ എന്ന് അവൾ ചോദിച്ചു, മഴ പെയ്യും എന്ന് ഞാൻ കരുതി. One small word, എന്ന്, does all of it. This lesson gives that word its grammatical account, and shows what Malayalam does not have to change when speech is reported.

സൂത്രങ്ങൾ · The rules

Direct speech keeps the words exactly as spoken and wraps them in ഉദ്ധരണിചിഹ്നങ്ങൾ: അവൻ പറഞ്ഞു, “ഞാൻ നാളെ വരും.” The quoted stretch is a complete sentence with its own full stop, and the ഞാൻ inside it still means the speaker, not the reporter.

പ്രത്യക്ഷകഥനത്തിൽ കഥനക്രിയ ആദ്യം വരാം — 'അവൻ പറഞ്ഞു, …' എന്നപോലെ. ഇത് മലയാള വാക്യക്രമത്തിലെ ഒരു അപവാദമാണ്: സാധാരണ ആഖ്യാതം അവസാനത്തിൽ; ഇവിടെ ഉദ്ധരണി പിന്നാലെ വരുന്നു.

Notice a small exception to everything level 12 has told you about word order. In direct speech the reporting verb may come first — അവൻ പറഞ്ഞു, followed by the quotation. The quoted sentence is not really an argument of the verb; it is displayed after it, the way English does it too.

Indirect speech drops the quotation marks and closes the reported clause with എന്ന്. The whole clause then sits in front of the reporting verb, exactly like any other ഉപവാക്യം from l12-05: അവൻ നാളെ വരുമെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു.

'എന്ന്' ഉപവാക്യത്തിന്റെ അവസാനത്തിലാണ്, ഇംഗ്ലീഷിലെ that പോലെ ആദ്യത്തിലല്ല. അതുകൊണ്ട് വായിക്കുമ്പോൾ 'എന്ന്' കാണുന്നിടത്ത് ഉദ്ധരണി തീരുന്നു എന്നു മനസ്സിലാക്കാം.

English opens a reported clause with 'that'; Malayalam closes it with എന്ന്. That is a useful reading habit to build: wherever you meet എന്ന്, the reported material has just ended and the main verb is about to arrive.

This is the good news of the lesson. English backshifts — 'he said he would come' — but Malayalam leaves the tense exactly as it was spoken: വരും stays വരും. Only the pronoun moves, and it moves for the obvious reason that the person referred to is now somebody else.
Any verb of saying, asking, knowing, thinking or feeling can take an എന്ന് clause: മഴ പെയ്യും എന്ന് ഞാൻ കരുതി, അവൻ എവിടെ പോയി എന്ന് എനിക്ക് അറിയില്ല, ബസ് വന്നോ എന്ന് അവൾ ചോദിച്ചു. A reported question keeps its own question form (എവിടെ, -ഓ) and needs no question mark.

'എന്ന' എന്ന പേരെച്ചരൂപവും ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുക: അത് നാമത്തിനു മുൻപിൽ വരുന്നു. 'രാമൻ എന്ന കുട്ടി' — പേര് പറയുന്ന പ്രയോഗം. 'അവൻ വരുമെന്ന വാർത്ത' — വാർത്തയുടെ ഉള്ളടക്കം.

The same particle has an adjectival form, എന്ന, which stands before a noun. രാമൻ എന്ന കുട്ടി is 'the boy called Rāman' — the everyday way of naming. അവൻ വരുമെന്ന വാർത്ത is 'the news that he is coming', where the clause supplies the content of the noun.

പടിപടിയായി · Step by step

പ്രത്യക്ഷം → പരോക്ഷം
