Level 12 · Lesson 2

അന്വയം
Word order and connection

പ്രത്യയങ്ങൾ ബന്ധം കാണിക്കുന്നതുകൊണ്ട് പദക്രമം മാറ്റാം; മാറുന്നത് ഊന്നൽ മാത്രം.

The endings carry the roles, so word order is free — what moving a word changes is emphasis.

ഓർക്കുക · You already know this

Who gave and who received has not shifted a millimetre. English cannot do this — move a noun there and you change who did what. Malayalam can, because the role is written on the word itself in its ending, not read off its position. Level 9 gave you those endings; this lesson is what they buy you.

സൂത്രങ്ങൾ · The rules

അന്വയം is the invisible wiring — which word goes with which, and in what capacity. പദക്രമം is merely the order in which the words were laid out on the page. Malayalam keeps these two apart cleanly, and that is the whole point of this lesson: you can rearrange the second without touching the first.

കവിതയിലെ പദങ്ങൾ ഗദ്യക്രമത്തിൽ അടുക്കിപ്പറഞ്ഞ് അർഥം വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നതിനെയും അന്വയം എന്നു പറയുന്നു. പഴയ വ്യാഖ്യാനങ്ങളിൽ 'അന്വയം' എന്ന തലക്കെട്ടിനു കീഴിൽ കാണുന്നത് അതാണ്.

The word has a second, related use you will meet in commentaries: an അന്വയം of a verse is its prose paraphrase, the words of the poem taken out of their metrical order and set down in plain sentence order. Same idea — the connections were always there; the paraphrase just makes the order match them.

Because -ക്ക് says 'recipient' wherever it stands, the three orders above are all correct and all mean the same thing. The one word that does not join the game is the finite verb: കൊടുത്തു stays at the end, as lesson 1 of this level said.
So if nothing changes, why bother moving anything? Because something does change — not the meaning but the weight. Put a word first and you announce that this is the point of the sentence. പുസ്തകം രാമൻ മീരയ്ക്ക് കൊടുത്തു answers 'what did he give her?'. Free order is not decoration; it is Malayalam's way of doing what English does with stress and with 'it was … that …'.

One caution. The freedom belongs to words that carry an ending. If two nouns are both bare — കുട്ടി പൂച്ച കണ്ടു — then order is the only clue you have, and reversing it genuinely confuses the reader. The fix is the one Malayalam itself uses: mark the object with -എ. പൂച്ചയെ കുട്ടി കണ്ടു is unambiguous in any order, because -എ has taken over the work that position was doing.

പടിപടിയായി · Step by step
