Level 12 · Lesson 1 ഉദ്ദേശ്യവും വിധേയവും
Subject and predicate
ഓരോ വാക്യവും ഉദ്ദേശ്യവും വിധേയവും ചേർന്നതാണ്; ആഖ്യാതം അവസാനം നിൽക്കുന്നു.
Every sentence is a subject plus a predicate — and the finite verb closes it.
ഓർക്കുക · You already know this
Every sentence you have made since lesson one has had two halves: the thing you are talking about, and what you say about it. കുട്ടി / ഉറങ്ങുന്നു. അമ്മ / ചായ ഉണ്ടാക്കി. This level names those halves and then works outward from them — word order, modifiers, roles, clauses. Nothing new is being asked of your mouth here; the whole level is about seeing the shape of what you already say.
സൂത്രങ്ങൾ · The rules
A subject need not be one word. In രാമന്റെ മൂത്ത മകൾ ഡൽഹിയിൽ പഠിക്കുന്നു the whole phrase രാമന്റെ മൂത്ത മകൾ is the ഉദ്ദേശ്യം. Some Malayalam grammars call the subject ആഖ്യ instead — the same thing under a different name, and it pairs neatly with ആഖ്യാതം, which is the next rule.
വിധേയത്തിൽ ആഖ്യാതം കൂടാതെ കർമം, അധികരണം, കാലം എന്നിവയും വരാം: 'അവൻ ഇന്നലെ വീട്ടിൽ കത്ത് എഴുതി.' ഇവയെല്ലാം ചേർന്നതാണ് വിധേയം; അതിന്റെ കേന്ദ്രം ആഖ്യാതമാണ്.
The predicate usually carries more than the verb — an object, a place, a time: അവൻ ഇന്നലെ വീട്ടിൽ കത്ത് എഴുതി. All four of those words are the വിധേയം, but എഴുതി is its centre. Everything else in the sentence is there because that verb needs it or allows it.
ഈ നിയമം കർശനമാണ്. വാക്യത്തിലെ മറ്റു പദങ്ങൾ സ്ഥാനം മാറ്റാം, ആഖ്യാതം മാറ്റാറില്ല. അടുത്ത പാഠത്തിൽ ആ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം നോക്കാം.
Hold on to this: the other words in a Malayalam sentence can move around quite freely, but the finite verb stays at the end. It is the one fixed point of the structure — which is exactly what makes the freedom of the rest safe. That freedom is the subject of the next lesson.
