പദനിർമാണം
How words are made

മൂലപദം, കൃത്ത്, തദ്ധിതം, സമാസം — പരിചിതമായ വാക്കുകൾ വേർതിരിച്ചു നോക്കാം.

A closing review: sorting familiar words into simple, derived and compound, each with its വിഗ്രഹം.

ഓർക്കുക · You already know this

This level had one question running through all twelve lessons: where does a new Malayalam word come from? Three answers, and you now know all of them. Some words cannot be taken apart at all — മരം, വീട്, കൈ. Some are one word plus a suffix — വായന, എഴുത്ത്, മലയാളി, നന്മ. Some are two words joined — അച്ഛനമ്മമാർ, മഴവെള്ളം, പുതുവർഷം. This closing lesson gives you the sorting method.

സൂത്രങ്ങൾ · The rules

Ask two questions of any word. Is there a suffix on it? Is there a second word inside it? No to both makes it a മൂലപദം; yes to the first makes it a derivative; yes to the second makes it a സമാസം. Nothing else is possible.
Look underneath the suffix. A verb under it gives a കൃത്ത്: വായന, എഴുത്ത്, ഓട്ടം. A noun under it gives a തദ്ധിതം: മലയാളി, കേരളീയൻ, മനുഷ്യത്വം. And the two can stack — എഴുത്ത് is a കൃത്ത്, and എഴുത്തുകാരൻ is a തദ്ധിതം built on top of it.
Unpack the compound into a phrase and read the shape of the phrase. Two members joined by -ഉം … -ഉം is a ദ്വന്ദ്വം; a case relation between them is a തത്പുരുഷൻ; the first describing the second is a കർമധാരയൻ; a phrase ending in 'the one who has …' is a ബഹുവ്രീഹി, because the compound names something outside itself; an adverbial sense is an അവ്യയീഭാവം.
A word can be perfectly analysable and still not mean what its parts say. മഴവെള്ളം is യൗഗികം — rain plus water, and that is exactly the meaning. നീലകണ്ഠൻ is രൂഢം — the parts say 'blue-throated one', but usage has fixed it on Śiva alone. കൈക്കൂലി is രൂഢം too: hand plus wage never adds up to 'bribe'. When you meet a new compound, unpack it first, then check the dictionary — the parts give you a guess, not a guarantee.

പടിപടിയായി · Step by step

മഴവെള്ളം — സമാസം

Practice

ഓരോ പദവും അതിന്റെ നിർമാണവുമായി ചേർക്കുക. Match each word to how it was made.
'മഴവെള്ളം' എന്നതിന്റെ ശരിയായ വിഗ്രഹം ഏത്? Which is the correct vigraha of മഴവെള്ളം?
'അച്ഛനമ്മമാർ' ഏതു സമാസം? Which kind of compound is അച്ഛനമ്മമാർ?
'നീലകണ്ഠൻ' രൂഢപദമാകുന്നത് എന്തുകൊണ്ട്? Why is നീലകണ്ഠൻ called a rūḍha word?
വാക്യം ഉണ്ടാക്കുക — 'There are many books in the reading room.' Arrange the words.
