Level 10 · Lesson 13 സകർമകവും അകർമകവും
Transitive and intransitive
കർമം വേണ്ട ക്രിയയും വേണ്ടാത്ത ക്രിയയും; ഉടയുക — ഉടയ്ക്കുക പോലുള്ള ജോഡികൾ.
Verbs that need an object and verbs that do not, and the paired forms Malayalam keeps for both.
ഓർക്കുക · You already know this
Say ഞാൻ ഉറങ്ങി and nobody asks anything more. Say ഞാൻ വാങ്ങി and the next word out of your listener's mouth is എന്ത് — bought what? Some verbs need an object before they feel finished and some do not, and you have been obeying that difference since level 2 without a word for it. Today it gets two names, and a small piece of Malayalam machinery comes with them.
സൂത്രങ്ങൾ · The rules
The test is one question. Put എന്ത് or ആരെ to the verb: if the sentence answers it, the verb is transitive. അവൾ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചു answers എന്ത് വായിച്ചു with പുസ്തകം, so വായിക്കുക is സകർമകം; അവൾ ചിരിച്ചു answers nothing, because laughing takes no object. One caution — this is a fact about the verb, not about the sentence. വായിക്കുക stays transitive in അവൾ ഇന്നലെ വായിച്ചു, where the object is simply left unsaid.
Set the past forms side by side and the pattern is unmistakable: കുപ്പി ഉടഞ്ഞു the bottle broke against അവൻ കുപ്പി ഉടച്ചു he broke the bottle; വാതിൽ അടഞ്ഞു the door closed against അമ്മ വാതിൽ അടച്ചു mother closed the door. The intransitive member is അകാരിതം with its -ഞ്ഞു past, the transitive member കാരിതം with its -ച്ചു past, so the class split of l10-02 is doing a second job here. English says 'the door closed' and 'closed the door' with one word; Malayalam never lets the two touch.
Do not mix this up with the പ്രയോജകം of l10-12. A causative adds a second actor — അധ്യാപകൻ കുട്ടിയെ പഠിപ്പിച്ചു has a teacher and a child, two people in one event. A transitive twin adds nobody: ഉടയ്ക്കുക is just the other verb the dictionary already lists, and അവൻ കുപ്പി ഉടച്ചു has a single actor doing a single thing.
ഒരു വസ്തുവിനെ പ്രത്യേകം ചൂണ്ടിക്കാണിക്കുമ്പോൾ അതിനും -എ ചേർക്കാം: 'ആ ദിവസത്തെ ഞാൻ ഓർക്കുന്നു.' നിർബന്ധമില്ല, പക്ഷേ ശരിയാണ്. അകർമകക്രിയയോട് ഒരിക്കലും -എ കർമം ചേരില്ല.
You may still add -എ to a thing when you are singling it out — ആ ദിവസത്തെ ഞാൻ ഓർക്കുന്നു — but there it is a choice, in a way it never is with people and animals. The one thing you may not do is hand an object to an intransitive verb: no -എ noun can attach to ഉറങ്ങുക or ഓടുക, and that is your practical test for which member of a pair you are holding.
പടിപടിയായി · Step by step
