നിഷേധം
The four negators

ഇല്ല, അല്ല, വേണ്ട, അരുത് — നാലു നിഷേധപദങ്ങൾക്ക് നാലു ജോലി.

Four negative words, four separate jobs, four different syntaxes.

നാലാം ലെവലിൽ നിങ്ങൾ നാലു വാക്കും പറഞ്ഞുകഴിഞ്ഞു: 'അവൻ വന്നില്ല', 'ഇത് പുസ്തകം അല്ല', 'എനിക്ക് ചായ വേണ്ട', 'അവിടെ പോകരുത്'. ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ ഇവയ്ക്കെല്ലാം 'not' ഒന്നു മതി; മലയാളത്തിൽ നാലു പദം, നാലു ജോലി.

You already use all four. English gets by with one word — not — and lets the auxiliary carry the difference. Malayalam divides the work: ഇല്ല for an action or an existence, അല്ല for an equation, വേണ്ട for a wish, അരുത് for a permission. Pick the wrong one and the sentence is not merely clumsy, it means something else.

സൂത്രങ്ങൾ · The rules

ക്രിയയെയോ ഉണ്മയെയോ നിഷേധിക്കാൻ ഇല്ല ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു; ക്രിയയോടു ചേരുമ്പോൾ അത് ഒറ്റപ്പദമായി മാറുന്നു.

നിയമം 1

ഭൂതം: പോയി + ഇല്ല = പോയില്ല. വർത്തമാനം: പോകുന്നു + ഇല്ല = പോകുന്നില്ല. ഭാവി: പോക് + ഇല്ല = പോകില്ല. ഉണ്മ: 'ഇവിടെ പുസ്തകം ഇല്ല'.

ഇല്ല is the negative of both ഉണ്ട് and of any verb. Fused to a verb it gives one word per tense: പോയില്ല, പോകുന്നില്ല, പോകില്ല. Standing alone it denies existence: ഇവിടെ പുസ്തകം ഇല്ല.

ഒരു വസ്തുവിന്റെ ഇല്ലായ്മയെ കുറിക്കുന്ന വാക്ക് ഇതാണ്. ഭൂതകാലത്തിൽ: ആയിരുന്നു → ആയിരുന്നില്ല; ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു → ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല.

ഇല്ല names an ഇല്ലായ്മ — a state of not being there, what Sanskrit-derived grammar calls അഭാവം. It has past forms too, built on the past copulas you met in l04-05: ആയിരുന്നില്ല 'was not', ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല 'was not there'.

രണ്ടു നാമങ്ങളെ തുല്യമാക്കുന്ന വാക്യത്തെ നിഷേധിക്കാൻ അല്ല ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു; ആണ് എന്നതിന്റെ നിഷേധരൂപമാണ് അല്ല.

നിയമം 2

ഇത് പുസ്തകം ആണ് → ഇത് പുസ്തകം അല്ല. അവൻ ഡോക്ടർ ആണ് → അവൻ ഡോക്ടർ അല്ല. ഇവിടെ ഇല്ല ചേർത്താൽ അർഥം മാറും.

അല്ല negates the equation X ആണ് Y. Say ഇത് പുസ്തകം ഇല്ല and you have not said 'this is not a book' — you have said 'there is no book here'. ആണ് pairs with അല്ല; ഉണ്ട് pairs with ഇല്ല. Keep the two pairs apart.

ആഗ്രഹത്തെയോ ആവശ്യത്തെയോ നിഷേധിക്കാൻ വേണ്ട ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു; വേണം എന്നതിന്റെ നിഷേധരൂപമാണ് അത്.

നിയമം 3

എനിക്ക് ചായ വേണം → എനിക്ക് ചായ വേണ്ട. ധാതുവിനോടു ചേരുമ്പോൾ -ഏണ്ട ആയി വരുന്നു: പോകേണ്ട, വരേണ്ട, പറയേണ്ട.

വേണ്ട says the thing is not wanted or not needed. With a noun it is a polite refusal: എനിക്ക് ചായ വേണ്ട. Attached to a verb it appears as -ഏണ്ട and means 'no need to' or a soft 'don't': പോകേണ്ട, വരേണ്ട.

വേണ്ട ഒരിക്കലും ഒരു കാര്യം ഇല്ല എന്നു പറയുന്നില്ല; അതു വേണ്ടെന്നു മാത്രം പറയുന്നു. 'എനിക്ക് ചോറ് ഇല്ല' എന്നാൽ ചോറ് കിട്ടിയില്ല; 'എനിക്ക് ചോറ് വേണ്ട' എന്നാൽ ചോറ് ആവശ്യമില്ല.

Watch this pair at the dinner table. എനിക്ക് ചോറ് ഇല്ല says there is no rice for me; എനിക്ക് ചോറ് വേണ്ട says I do not want any. The first is a fact about the world, the second a fact about your wishes — and only the second is a polite refusal.

അനുവാദം നിഷേധിക്കാൻ, അതായത് നിരോധത്തിന്, അരുത് ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു; അത് ധാതുവിനോടു നേരിട്ടു ചേരുന്നു.

നിയമം 4

പോക് + അരുത് = പോകരുത്. പറയ് + അരുത് = പറയരുത്. ചെയ്യ് + അരുത് = ചെയ്യരുത്. ഇത് ആജ്ഞയാണ്, ആഗ്രഹമല്ല.

അരുത് is prohibition — you are telling somebody they may not. പോകരുത് is 'do not go'; പോകേണ്ട is the gentler 'no need to go'. A road sign uses അരുത്; a host offering more rice hears വേണ്ട.

ചുരുക്കത്തിൽ: ആണ് ↔ അല്ല, ഉണ്ട് ↔ ഇല്ല, വേണം ↔ വേണ്ട, പോകാം ↔ പോകരുത്. ഓരോ ജോടിയും വെവ്വേറെ ഓർക്കുക.

Learn them as four pairs and you will never mix them up: ആണ് opposes അല്ല, ഉണ്ട് opposes ഇല്ല, വേണം opposes വേണ്ട, and the permission പോകാം opposes the prohibition പോകരുത്. The pair, not the word, is the unit worth memorising.
