Forming the past

ഓടി, പഠിച്ചു, പറഞ്ഞു, വന്നു, ചെയ്തു — അഞ്ചു ഭൂതരൂപങ്ങളും നിങ്ങൾ ലെവൽ നാലിൽ പഠിച്ചു, പട്ടികയായി മനഃപാഠമാക്കി. ഭൂതകാലത്തിന് ഒറ്റ പ്രത്യയമില്ല; ധാതുവിന്റെ അന്ത്യമാണ് ഏതു പ്രത്യയം വരും എന്നു തീരുമാനിക്കുന്നത്. ആ അഞ്ചു ഗണങ്ങൾ ഇന്ന് അടുക്കി വെക്കാം.

ഓടി, പഠിച്ചു, പറഞ്ഞു, വന്നു, ചെയ്തു — you learned all five past shapes back in level 4, as lists to be memorised. The present has one marker and the future has one, but the past has five, and the root's final sound picks between them. This lesson sorts them into groups, which turns a memory task into a rule: afterwards you will be able to guess the past of a verb you have never met, and be right most of the time.

ഓടുക → ഓടി, ഉറങ്ങുക → ഉറങ്ങി, വാങ്ങുക → വാങ്ങി, എഴുതുക → എഴുതി, തുടങ്ങുക → തുടങ്ങി, നൽകുക → നൽകി, കിട്ടുക → കിട്ടി. ധാതുവിൽ മറ്റൊരു മാറ്റവുമില്ല.

The largest and friendliest group simply adds -ഇ: ഓടി, ഉറങ്ങി, വാങ്ങി, എഴുതി, തുടങ്ങി, നൽകി, കിട്ടി. Nothing else in the root changes, so this is the past to try first when you are guessing. കിട്ടുക is today's new member and a useful one — it means 'to be got', and its receiver stands in the ഉദ്ദേശിക case just as with വേണം and ഇഷ്ടം: എനിക്ക് കത്ത് കിട്ടി, 'I got a letter'.

പഠിക്കുക → പഠിച്ചു, കുടിക്കുക → കുടിച്ചു, അവസാനിക്കുക → അവസാനിച്ചു, സ്വീകരിക്കുക → സ്വീകരിച്ചു. ഈ ഗണത്തിൽ അപവാദങ്ങളില്ല.

Class two is last lesson's കാരിതം: every one of them makes its past by swapping -ഇക്കുക for -ഇച്ചു. പഠിച്ചു, കുടിച്ചു, അവസാനിച്ചു, സ്വീകരിച്ചു. This group has no exceptions at all, which is worth remembering, because it is also the group that keeps growing.

പറയുക → പറഞ്ഞു, കരയുക → കരഞ്ഞു, അറിയുക → അറിഞ്ഞു, നനയുക → നനഞ്ഞു. അപവാദം ഒന്ന്: ചെയ്യുക → ചെയ്തു.

Roots ending in യ take -ഞ്ഞു: പറയുക gives പറഞ്ഞു, കരയുക gives കരഞ്ഞു, അറിയുക gives അറിഞ്ഞു, നനയുക gives നനഞ്ഞു. One very common verb refuses to join — ചെയ്യുക gives ചെയ്തു, which you memorised in l04-04 and which belongs with the -തു group below. Learn it as the exception it is and the rest of the group is safe.

-ന്നു: വരുക → വന്നു, തരുക → തന്നു, നിൽക്കുക → നിന്നു, നടക്കുക → നടന്നു, ഇരിക്കുക → ഇരുന്നു. -തു: ചെയ്യുക → ചെയ്തു, കൊടുക്കുക → കൊടുത്തു, എടുക്കുക → എടുത്തു, വിൽക്കുക → വിറ്റു. ഇവയോടൊപ്പം പഠിച്ചുവെച്ച കണ്ടു, കേട്ടു, ഇട്ടു, പോയി എന്നിവയും ഓർക്കുക.

Two closed groups remain, small in membership but huge in frequency. The -ന്നു group: വന്നു, തന്നു, നിന്നു, നടന്നു, ഇരുന്നു. The -തു group: ചെയ്തു, കൊടുത്തു, എടുത്തു, വിറ്റു. Alongside them keep the handful you already learned whole — കണ്ടു, കേട്ടു, ഇട്ടു, പോയി. And note today's other new verb: തരുക and കൊടുക്കുക both mean 'give', but തരുക is giving towards me or us (അവൻ എനിക്ക് പുസ്തകം തന്നു), while കൊടുക്കുക is giving to somebody else (അവൻ അമ്മയ്ക്ക് പുസ്തകം കൊടുത്തു).
