Level 10 · Lesson 3 മൂന്നു കാലങ്ങൾ
The three tenses
ഭൂതം, വർത്തമാനം, ഭാവി — ഓരോ കാലത്തിനും ഒരു രൂപം മാത്രം.
Past, present and future, their markers, and one form of each for every subject.
ഓർക്കുക · You already know this
You have been saying all three since level 4. The root does not move between them; only the ending does. That difference of ending is what grammar calls കാലം, tense — and Malayalam has exactly three of them, each with exactly one form.
സൂത്രങ്ങൾ · The rules
കാലം is the marking of when the action happens: ഭൂതകാലം for what is over, വർത്തമാനകാലം for what is going on, ഭാവികാലം for what is to come. Now the arithmetic that makes Malayalam easy. Three tenses, and no person, number or gender anywhere — ഞാൻ ഓടും, നീ ഓടും, അവൻ ഓടും, അവൾ ഓടും, അവർ ഓടും. A Malayalam verb therefore has three finite tense forms in total, where its Dravidian neighbours need a separate form for each person as well.
Add -ഉന്നു to the root for the present and -ഉം for the future: ഓടുന്നു and ഓടും, പഠിക്കുന്നു and പഠിക്കും. In practice, take the dictionary form, drop its final ക and put the marker there. Both suffixes have one shape and no exceptions — they are the tidiest corner of the language. The two verbs of being stand outside the system: ആണ് and ഉണ്ട് take no -ഉന്നു, and their past is the ready-made ആയിരുന്നു and ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
One Malayalam present covers both English presents: ഞാൻ ചായ കുടിക്കുന്നു is 'I drink tea' and 'I am drinking tea' at once. The -ഉം form likewise does double duty — നാളെ ഞാൻ ചായ കുടിക്കും is a plan, while രാവിലെ ഞാൻ ചായ കുടിക്കും is a routine. In every case the time word decides: ഇപ്പോൾ, ഇന്ന്, നാളെ, ദിവസവും. This is why English speakers keep reaching for a present where a Malayalam speaker says -ഉം.
The past is the only untidy tense. Instead of one suffix it has five shapes — ഓടി, പഠിച്ചു, പറഞ്ഞു, വന്നു, ചെയ്തു — chosen by the shape of the root, and which root takes which is the whole of the next lesson. Do not let the number alarm you: the five are choices between verbs, not within a verb. Each verb still has exactly one past form, and it serves ഞാൻ, നീ, അവൾ and അവർ alike.
