Level 9 · Lesson 5

പ്രതിഗ്രാഹിക
The accusative -e

കർമത്തിന്റെ വിഭക്തി -എ: ചേതനത്തിന് നിർബന്ധം, അചേതനത്തിന് ഐച്ഛികം.

The accusative -e is compulsory on animate objects and optional on inanimate ones.

ഓർക്കുക · You already know this

You have been making this distinction for six levels without a name for it. ഞാൻ അമ്മയെ വിളിച്ചു carries a tail on the object; ഞാൻ പത്രം വായിച്ചു carries none — and both are correct Malayalam. Today the tail gets its name, പ്രതിഗ്രാഹിക, and the choice between the two gets its rule.

സൂത്രങ്ങൾ · The rules

ക്രിയയുടെ കർമത്തെ കുറിക്കുന്ന വിഭക്തി പ്രതിഗ്രാഹിക; അതിന്റെ പ്രത്യയം -എ ആകുന്നു.
നിയമം 1
ആരെ? എന്തിനെ? — ഈ ചോദ്യങ്ങൾക്കുള്ള ഉത്തരം പ്രതിഗ്രാഹികയിൽ നിൽക്കുന്നു.
The case of the object; it answers ആരെ (whom) and എന്തിനെ (what).

The subject stands in the നിർദ്ദേശിക, the object in the പ്രതിഗ്രാഹിക: മകൾ അച്ഛനെ വിളിച്ചു. Remember that the verb records nothing — വിളിച്ചു is one single form for every speaker. With two human beings in the sentence, the -എ is the only thing telling you which one did the calling.

കർമം ചേതനമാണെങ്കിൽ -എ നിർബന്ധമാകുന്നു; അചേതനമാണെങ്കിൽ അത് ഐച്ഛികം.
നിയമം 2
ചേതനം = ജീവനുള്ളത്: ആൾ, മൃഗം, പേര്. അചേതനം = ജീവനില്ലാത്ത സാധനം.
Animate objects (people, animals, names) must take -എ; inanimate ones need not.

ഞാൻ കുട്ടിയെ വിളിച്ചു — ഇവിടെ വാൽ കളഞ്ഞാൽ വാക്യം തെറ്റാകും. ഞാൻ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചു — ഇവിടെ വാൽ വേണ്ട. മൃഗവും പേരും ചേതനം തന്നെ: പട്ടിയെ കണ്ടു, മീരയെ വിളിച്ചു.

ഞാൻ കുട്ടിയെ വിളിച്ചു without the tail is simply ungrammatical, and it can even flip the sense — കുട്ടി വിളിച്ചു makes the child the caller. But ഞാൻ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചു is the ordinary, correct way to say it. Animals and personal names count as ചേതനം too: പട്ടിയെ കണ്ടു, മീരയെ വിളിച്ചു.

അചേതനമായ കർമം നിശ്ചിതമാകുമ്പോഴും ക്രിയയിൽനിന്ന് അകന്നു നിൽക്കുമ്പോഴും -എ ചേർക്കാം.
നിയമം 3
നിശ്ചിതം = ഏതെന്ന് തീർച്ചയുള്ളത്; അനിശ്ചിതം = ഏതെന്ന് തീർച്ചയില്ലാത്തത്.
A definite inanimate object may take -എ; an indefinite one normally does not.

പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചു — ഏതെന്ന് പറയുന്നില്ല, അനിശ്ചിതം. ഈ പുസ്തകത്തെ ഞാൻ വായിച്ചു — ഏതെന്ന് തീർച്ച, നിശ്ചിതം. അതുകൊണ്ട് അചേതനത്തിലെ -എ വ്യാകരണത്തിന്റെ ആവശ്യമല്ല, തെളിവിന്റെ ആവശ്യമാണ്.

പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചു leaves the book unspecified — അനിശ്ചിതം. ഈ പുസ്തകത്തെ ഞാൻ വായിച്ചു points at one particular book both of you have in mind — നിശ്ചിതം. So on an inanimate object the tail is never grammar's demand; it is clarity's.

പടിപടിയായി · Step by step
