Level 9 · Lesson 4 ഏഴു വിഭക്തികൾ
The seven cases
വിഭക്തികളുടെ ക്രമമുള്ള പട്ടിക; കർത്താവും കർമവും — നിർദ്ദേശികയും പ്രതിഗ്രാഹികയും കാണിക്കുന്ന രണ്ടു ജോലികൾ.
The canonical list of seven cases in order, and the two sentence roles the first two of them mark.
ഓർക്കുക · You already know this
'അധ്യാപകൻ കുട്ടിയെ വിളിച്ചു. കുട്ടി അമ്മയോട് പറഞ്ഞു. അമ്മ കുട്ടിക്ക് പഴം കൊടുത്തു.' — ഏഴു വാലുകളും മൂന്നാം ലെവലിൽ ഓരോന്നായി പഠിച്ചു. ഇന്ന് അവയെ ക്രമത്തിൽ ഒരു പട്ടികയാക്കുന്നു.
Nothing new arrives in this lesson — every one of these endings has been in your mouth since level 3. What arrives is the order. Malayalam grammar counts seven വിഭക്തികൾ in a fixed sequence, and കേരളപാണിനീയം lists them in the order below. Learn the list once and the next six lessons each take one line of it.
സൂത്രങ്ങൾ · The rules
സംസ്കൃതത്തിലെ എട്ടു വിഭക്തികളുമായി ഇതിനെ കൂട്ടിക്കുഴയ്ക്കരുത്. മലയാളത്തിന് സ്വന്തം ഏഴു വിഭക്തികളുണ്ട്; സംബോധന ഇവയിൽ എണ്ണുന്നില്ല.
If you know Sanskrit, resist mapping this onto the eight vibhaktis one by one. Malayalam's seven are its own, ordered by Malayalam usage, and the vocative is deliberately left outside the count — it gets its own lesson later.
പടിപടിയായി · Step by step
Swap the subject and watch nothing happen to the verb: അധ്യാപിക കുട്ടിയെ വിളിച്ചു, അധ്യാപകർ കുട്ടിയെ വിളിച്ചു. All the sentence's grammatical information lives on the nouns, which is exactly why the case system carries so much weight in Malayalam.
