Look at the last letter of words you have been writing since level one: അവൻ, പാൽ, വാതിൽ, ആൾ, മീൻ. It is not ന, ല, ള — it is a differently shaped letter with no vowel sign and no candrakkala. These five shapes have a name, and getting them right is the single most visible mark of correct Malayalam spelling.

ണ, ന, ര, ല, ള എന്നിവയുടെ സ്വരമില്ലാത്ത രൂപങ്ങൾ. പെൺ, അവൻ, അവർ, പാൽ, ആൾ — ഓരോന്നിനും ഓരോ ഉദാഹരണം.
A chillu is the vowel-less form of ണ, ന, ര, ല or ള, written as a letter in its own right. One example each: പെൺ, അവൻ, അവർ, പാൽ, ആൾ. No other consonant in Malayalam has such a form.
ചില്ല് പദാന്തത്തിൽ മാത്രമല്ല, പദമധ്യത്തിലും വരാം — ആൾക്കാർ, കാൽനട. പക്ഷേ അതിന്റെ സ്വാഭാവിക ഇടം വാക്കിന്റെ അവസാനമാണ്.
A chillu turns up inside a word too — ആൾക്കാർ, കാൽനട — but its home is the end of a word. Because it carries no vowel, it can simply stop: the word ends there, cleanly, with a closed consonant.
ചില്ലിനു പിന്നാലെ സ്വരം വന്നാൽ ചില്ല് അഴിഞ്ഞ് പൂർണവ്യഞ്ജനമായി മാറുന്നു.

അവൻ + ആണ് → അവനാണ്. അവർ + ഉടെ → അവരുടെ. നിങ്ങൾ + ഉടെ → നിങ്ങളുടെ. ചില്ലിന് സ്വരത്തെ ഏറ്റുവാങ്ങാൻ കഴിയാത്തതുകൊണ്ട് അത് ന, ര, ള എന്നിങ്ങനെ പഴയ രൂപത്തിലേക്കു മടങ്ങുന്നു.
A chillu cannot carry a vowel, so when a vowel follows it unwinds back into its full consonant: അവൻ + ആണ് gives അവനാണ്, അവർ + ഉടെ gives അവരുടെ, നിങ്ങൾ + ഉടെ gives നിങ്ങളുടെ. You have been writing these joined forms for twenty levels; this is why they look the way they do.
ഇതു മനഃപാഠമാക്കേണ്ട കാര്യമല്ല. ൺ → ണ, ൻ → ന, ർ → ര, ൽ → ല, ൾ → ള. ചില്ലിന്റെ പിന്നിൽ ഏതു വർണമാണെന്നു നോക്കിയാൽ മതി.
There is nothing to memorise: ൺ becomes ണ, ൻ becomes ന, ർ becomes ര, ൽ becomes ല, ൾ becomes ള. Look at the chillu, see which letter it is the bare form of, and give it the vowel that has arrived.
ചില്ലും ചന്ദ്രക്കലയും ഒന്നല്ല. ചില്ലിൽ സ്വരമില്ല; ചന്ദ്രക്കലയോടെ എഴുതുന്ന പദാന്തത്തിൽ ഒരു ചെറിയ സ്വരമുണ്ട്.

അവൻ — നിർദ്ദേശിക, ചില്ല് ൻ. അവന് — ഉദ്ദേശിക, ചന്ദ്രക്കലയോടു കൂടിയ ന. രണ്ടും രണ്ടു വാക്ക്, രണ്ട് അർഥം. ആ ചെറിയ സ്വരത്തിന്റെ പേര് അടുത്ത പാഠത്തിൽ.
അവൻ is 'he'; അവന് is 'to him', the dative you learned in l03-06. The whole difference is that the first ends in a chillu with no vowel and the second ends in ന plus a small vowel written with candrakkala. Never swap them: they are different words. That small vowel gets its name in the next lesson.

സ്വരത്തിൽ അവസാനിക്കുന്നത് സ്വരാന്തം — കുട, ചായ, വീട്. വ്യഞ്ജനത്തിൽ അവസാനിക്കുന്നത് വ്യഞ്ജനാന്തം — അവൻ, പാൽ. അനുസ്വാരത്തിൽ അവസാനിക്കുന്നവ — മരം, ഭക്ഷണം.
A native Dravidian word closes in one of only three ways: with a vowel (കുട, ചായ), with a chillu (അവൻ, പാൽ), or with the anusvāram ം (മരം, ഭക്ഷണം). It never ends in a plain stop the way English words do. This is a fact about the language, not about the script.
