Take an ordinary Malayalam sentence: 'The teacher told the students to read the book.' അധ്യാപകൻ, വിദ്യാർഥി and പുസ്തകം come from Sanskrit; the case ending ഓട്, the infinitive ആൻ and the verb പറഞ്ഞു are Malayalam's own. Two languages stand in one sentence with no visible seam. That blend was given a name seven centuries ago: മണിപ്രവാളം.
വിശദീകരണം · Explanation
ലീലാതിലകം is a fourteenth-century work, the oldest treatise we have on this language. The curious thing is that although it is about Malayalam it is written in Sanskrit, and we do not know who wrote it. Its method is the classical one: short സൂത്രങ്ങൾ, each followed by a വൃത്തി, a prose commentary that unpacks it. The work is built in eight parts, and it calls each part a ശില്പം.
The name is itself a simile. മണി is a red gem and പ്രവാളം is coral. Both are red; string them on one thread and the eye cannot tell where the gem ends and the coral begins. Sanskrit and Malayalam were to be joined like that — neither jarring against the other, neither swallowing the other. The beauty of the join is the whole point.
Beside മണിപ്രവാളം the Līlātilakam describes a second kind of poetry: പാട്ട്. A പാട്ട് uses only the Dravidian letters and is bound by എതുക and മോന — rhyme on the second syllable of the line, and alliteration on the first. So two roads ran side by side in Kerala: the Sanskrit-leaning മണിപ്രവാളം and the Dravidian-leaning പാട്ട്.
The book's boldest claim is a different one: that the language of Kerala is not a branch of Sanskrit nor of Tamil but a language with rules of its own. Maṇipravāḷa poems such as ഉണ്ണുനീലിസന്ദേശം are the surviving witnesses of that age. And the mixture is alive in the Malayalam you are learning right now — you used it in the very first sentence of this lesson.

Take one sentence from today's newspaper and mark each word 'Sanskrit' or 'Malayalam'. Then look at where the verbs and the case endings sit. They will nearly all be on the Malayalam side — the Sanskrit words supply the nouns, the Malayalam grammar holds the sentence together. That is Maṇipravāḷam in its modern, everyday form.
