Level 7 · Lesson 2 അക്ഷരമാല
The alphabet
അക്ഷരമാല ഒരു പട്ടികയല്ല, ഒരു ക്രമമാണ് — ആദ്യം സ്വരങ്ങൾ, പിന്നെ വ്യഞ്ജനങ്ങൾ.
The Malayalam alphabet is not a list but an ordered system: vowels first, then consonants from throat to lips.

There is no reason at all why English runs a b c d; you simply memorise it. The Malayalam അക്ഷരമാല is different. Its order comes out of your own mouth. First the sounds that can stand alone, then the sounds that cannot — and those are arranged from the back of the throat forward to the lips, in five neat rows of five. Once you see the plan, the order stops being something to memorise and becomes something to follow with your tongue.
വിശദീകരണം · Explanation
Thirteen vowels are in living use: അ ആ ഇ ഈ ഉ ഊ ഋ എ ഏ ഐ ഒ ഓ ഔ. Older lists add ൠ ഌ ൡ, which you will meet only in a handful of Sanskrit words. Children reciting the list also tack on അം and അഃ at the end. Those two are not really vowels — they are അ plus a sign — and lesson 5 of this level takes them apart. Notice already that എ/ഏ and ഒ/ഓ are separate letters: short and long, and the difference changes words.
Read down the last column of the five rows: ങ ഞ ണ ന മ. Every one is a nasal, and each is made at exactly the place its row is made. That is the grid the alphabet is built on, and level 8 gives its rows and columns their proper names. After the twenty-five come eleven more letters: യ ര ല വ ശ ഷ സ ഹ ള ഴ റ. The last of them are the Dravidian ones — ഴ and റ do not exist in Sanskrit at all, and ഴ is the letter Malayalam is famous for.
One fact about the ലിപി matters more than any other: every consonant letter already contains the vowel അ. ക is not k, it is ka — ക് plus അ. This is why അക്ഷരം means both 'letter' and 'syllable', and why Malayalam writing is counted in syllables rather than in single sounds. Everything in the next two lessons — the vowel signs, the ചന്ദ്രക്കല, the chillus — exists to manage that hidden അ.

ഉപയോഗിക്കുക · Use it
Recite the five rows aloud, slowly, and pay attention to your tongue rather than to the page: ക ഖ ഗ ഘ ങ, ച ഛ ജ ഝ ഞ, ട ഠ ഡ ഢ ണ, ത ഥ ദ ധ ന, പ ഫ ബ ഭ മ. You should feel the contact travel forward, row by row, until your lips close on മ. Then take five words you already know — കട, ചായ, തല, പാൽ, മരം — and say which row each one begins in.
