Level 7 · Lesson 1 എന്തിനാണ് വ്യാകരണം?
Why grammar?
വ്യാകരണം പുതിയ ഭാഷയല്ല; നിങ്ങൾ പറയുന്ന ഭാഷയുടെ വിവരണമാണ്.
Grammar is not a new language — it is the description of the one you already speak.
വായന · Reading
Over six levels you have said a great deal of Malayalam. You say ഇന്നലെ ഞാൻ വീട്ടിൽ പോയി — yesterday I went home. Nobody says ഇന്നലെ ഞാൻ വീട് ഇൽ പോയി. You already know the second one is wrong; what you do not yet have is the language for saying why it is wrong. Supplying that is the whole job of വ്യാകരണം. Nothing in Arc B will teach you a new Malayalam. It will teach you names for the Malayalam already in your mouth.
വിശദീകരണം · Explanation
A rule is not an order; it is an observation. When -ഇൽ joins വീട്, the result is വീട്ടിൽ. No committee decided that. Every speaker does it, including you, and the grammarian merely wrote down what everybody was already doing. That is why Arc B can be restful: you are not learning to obey, you are learning to notice.
One example of each. ശബ്ദം: when മഴ and കാലം meet, the ക doubles — മഴക്കാലം. പദം: വീട് plus -ഇൽ gives വീട്ടിൽ. വാക്യം: in Malayalam the verb stands at the end of the sentence. അർഥം: ഇത് പുസ്തകം അല്ല denies an equation while പുസ്തകം ഇല്ല denies existence — same job in English, two different words here. Levels 8 to 12 walk these four in order: sounds first, then words, then sentences, with meaning riding along the whole way.
Malayalam has two old grammars, and you will meet both. The ലീലാതിലകം is from the fourteenth century, written in Sanskrit by an author nobody can name. The കേരളപാണിനീയം is from 1896, by എ. ആർ. രാജരാജവർമ, whom Kerala calls കേരളപാണിനി — its Pāṇini. Arc B follows the second one's running order, and lesson 7 will introduce each book properly.

Write down three sentences you actually said in Malayalam today. In each one, circle a single word and ask it one question: why does it have that shape? വീട്ടിൽ, not വീട്. അമ്മയെ, not അമ്മ. പോയി, not പോകുന്നു. You are not expected to answer yet. Learning to ask is what this level is for, and every one of those questions has a lesson waiting for it in levels 8 to 12.
