Level 7 · Lesson 3 ഹ്രസ്വവും ദീർഘവും
Short and long
സ്വരത്തിന്റെ നീളം അർഥം മാറ്റുന്നു — കുടി, കൂടി; മല, മാല.
Vowel length carries meaning in Malayalam, and the vowel signs write it.
വായന · Reading
കുടി and കൂടി. മുടി and മൂടി. മല and മാല. കൊടി and കോടി. In each pair the letters are the same; only the length of one vowel changes. And yet: മുടി is hair, മൂടി is a lid; മല is a hill, മാല is a garland; കൊടി is a flag, കോടി is ten million. Length is not decoration in Malayalam. It is the difference between two words, so a hurried short vowel is not a small mistake — it is a different word.
വിശദീകരണം · Explanation
For English speakers the hard pairs are എ/ഏ and ഒ/ഓ, because English hears them as one sound each. Say കൊടി and കോടി one after the other until the two feel different in your jaw, not just in your head. The vowel ഋ is a special case: it belongs to words that came in from Sanskrit — കൃഷി farming, മൃഗം animal, ഋതു season — and its long partner ൠ is effectively dead.
The signs sit on different sides of the letter. To the right: കാ, കി, കീ. Below: കു, കൂ, കൃ. To the left: കെ, കേ, കൈ. On both sides at once: കൊ, കോ. Watch that left-hand group. In കെ the sign is written before the consonant but spoken after it, which is why beginners misread കേരളം as if it began with an e. Read the consonant first, always, and then collect the signs around it.
ഐ and ഔ get a name of their own: സന്ധ്യക്ഷരം, 'the joined letters', because each is two vowels run together — അ + ഇ gives ഐ, അ + ഉ gives ഔ. You can hear the glide in കൈ (hand), ഐക്യം (unity), ഔഷധം (medicine), കൗതുകം (curiosity). They count as long, and knowing what they are made of will pay off when Sanskrit-layer sandhi turns up in level 8.

അഭ്യാസം · Practice
ഉപയോഗിക്കുക · Use it
Say the four pairs out loud, twice each, counting to two in your head on the long one: കുടി–കൂടി, മുടി–മൂടി, മല–മാല, കൊടി–കോടി. Then write one line by hand — ക കാ കി കീ കു കൂ കൃ കെ കേ കൈ കൊ കോ കൗ — and do the same line with മ and with പ. Your hand will learn where each sign lives faster than your eye will, and after three lines you will stop reading കെ backwards.
