-ആം രൂപത്തിന് രണ്ടു പണി ഉണ്ട്. ഒന്ന്: 'നമുക്ക് പോകാം' — ക്ഷണം. രണ്ട്: 'ഈ പുസ്തകം വായിക്കാം' — മൃദുവായ നിർദ്ദേശം. ചോദ്യത്തിൽ -ആമോ: 'ഒരു പുസ്തകം നിർദ്ദേശിക്കാമോ?'
The -ആം form you met for plans in level 4 is also how Malayalam recommends. നമുക്ക് പോകാം is 'let's go'; ഈ പുസ്തകം വായിക്കാം, with no നമുക്ക്, is the gentle 'you could read this one' — an offer, not an order. It never sounds pushy, which is exactly why it is the form for book advice. Add -ഓ and it becomes a polite request: നിർദ്ദേശിക്കാമോ? Could you suggest one?
എഴുത്തുകാരൻ പുരുഷൻ, എഴുത്തുകാരി സ്ത്രീ; രണ്ടു പേരും ചേർന്നാൽ എഴുത്തുകാർ. 'കവി' രണ്ടിനും ഉപയോഗിക്കും. മാധവിക്കുട്ടി പ്രസിദ്ധയായ ഒരു എഴുത്തുകാരി ആണ്.
എഴുത്തുകാരൻ ends in the chillu ൻ and names a man; the woman is എഴുത്തുകാരി, and the plural for either or both is എഴുത്തുകാർ with ർ. കവി, though, is used for a poet of any gender — Malayalam does not insist on a separate word there. മാധവിക്കുട്ടി, who also wrote in English as Kamala Das, is the എഴുത്തുകാരി most learners meet first.
സാഹിത്യത്തിന്റെ വാക്കുകൾ: കവിത, കഥ, നോവൽ, ഉപന്യാസം. 'നോവൽ' ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ നിന്ന് വന്ന വാക്ക് ആണ്; മലയാളം അത് അതേപടി എടുത്തു.
The shelf labels: കവിത (a poem, or poetry as a whole), കഥ (story), നോവൽ (novel), ഉപന്യാസം (essay). നോവൽ is simply the English word taken in and left as it is — the form arrived in Malayalam in the nineteenth century and the name came with it. കവിത and കഥ, older things, have old Indian names.

ഒരു സുഹൃത്തിനോട് ഒരു പുസ്തകം നിർദ്ദേശിക്കുക, മൂന്നു വാക്യത്തിൽ: 'ഇത് ഒരു ചെറിയ നോവൽ ആണ്. എഴുത്തുകാരൻ … ആണ്. നിങ്ങൾക്ക് ഇത് വായിക്കാം.' പിന്നെ ചോദിക്കുക: 'നിങ്ങൾക്ക് ഏത് എഴുത്തുകാരനെ ഇഷ്ടമാണ്?'
Recommend a book to somebody in three sentences — any book, in any language: ഇത് ഒരു ചെറിയ നോവൽ ആണ്. എഴുത്തുകാരൻ … ആണ്. നിങ്ങൾക്ക് ഇത് വായിക്കാം. Keep that last verb in -ആം and hear how much softer it is than an order. Then turn the question around: നിങ്ങൾക്ക് ഏത് എഴുത്തുകാരനെ ഇഷ്ടമാണ്? And when you are ready for real Malayalam on a page, ബഷീർ is the kindest place to begin — short books, short sentences, and a great deal of laughter.
