 ജോൺ —  വളരെ ഇഷ്ടമായി. കഴിച്ചിട്ട് ഞാൻ ഒരു ചായ കുടിച്ചു. 
Very much. After eating I drank a tea.  
 ലീല —  ഇന്ന് പുട്ട് കഴിച്ചിട്ട് ഒരു ദോശ കൂടി കഴിക്കണം!

വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

തേങ്ങ എല്ലാ അടുക്കളയിലും ഉണ്ട്. പുട്ടിൽ ചിരകിയ തേങ്ങ, അപ്പത്തിൽ തേങ്ങാപ്പാൽ, കറിയിൽ വെളിച്ചെണ്ണ. കേരളം എന്ന പേരു തന്നെ കേരത്തിൽ നിന്ന് വരുന്നു എന്ന് പറയും.

Coconut is not an ingredient in Kerala cooking so much as its floor. Grated തേങ്ങ is layered through പുട്ട്, തേങ്ങാപ്പാൽ (coconut milk) softens the batter for അപ്പം, and വെളിച്ചെണ്ണ (coconut oil) carries nearly every curry. People will tell you the name കേരളം itself comes from കേരം, the coconut palm.

രണ്ടു കാര്യം ക്രമത്തിൽ പറയാൻ -ഇട്ട് മതി: 'പുട്ട് കഴിച്ചിട്ട് ചായ കുടിച്ചു.' ആദ്യം നടന്നത് -ഇട്ട് രൂപത്തിൽ വരും. കാലം അവസാനത്തെ ക്രിയയിൽ മാത്രം.

To line up two actions, use the വിനയെച്ചം in -ഇട്ട് from level 5: പുട്ട് കഴിച്ചിട്ട് ചായ കുടിച്ചു — having eaten puttu, I drank tea. The earlier event takes the -ഇട്ട് shape and the later one carries the tense. Note that only the last verb is marked for time: change കുടിച്ചു to കുടിക്കും and the whole chain moves to the future without touching കഴിച്ചിട്ട്. You can hang three or four of these in a row and the sentence still holds.

Kerala food comes in pairs, and naming the pair is how you order like a local: പുട്ടും കടലയും (puttu and black chickpea curry), അപ്പവും തേങ്ങാപ്പാലും, ദോശയും ചമ്മന്തിയും (dosa and chutney), and the one everybody argues about, കപ്പയും മീൻകറിയും. Notice the -ഉം … -ഉം listing from level 3 doing the work, and the sandhi in it: അപ്പം plus ഉം gives അപ്പവും, ദോശ plus ഉം gives ദോശയും.
