വിശദീകരണം · Explanation
ഒരു ഖണ്ഡികയിൽ ഒരേ കാലം നിർത്തുക. ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ കാര്യം പറയുമ്പോൾ: 'ഞാൻ ഒരു കോളേജിൽ പഠിക്കുന്നു. എന്റെ വിഷയം ചരിത്രം ആണ്. ദിവസവും പാഠപുസ്തകം വായിക്കുന്നു. അടുത്ത മാസം പരീക്ഷ ഉണ്ട്.'
Here is the whole skill of this lesson. Pick a tense before you open your mouth, and stay in it until the topic changes. A paragraph in the present: ഞാൻ ഒരു കോളേജിൽ പഠിക്കുന്നു. എന്റെ വിഷയം ചരിത്രം ആണ്. ദിവസവും പാഠപുസ്തകം വായിക്കുന്നു. അടുത്ത മാസം പരീക്ഷ ഉണ്ട്. Four sentences, four present-tense endings, no wobble. English lets you drift between tenses and still be understood; in Malayalam the drift is audible immediately.
Now the same paragraph moved wholesale into the past: ഞാൻ ഒരു കോളേജിൽ പഠിച്ചു. എന്റെ വിഷയം ചരിത്രം ആയിരുന്നു. ദിവസവും പാഠപുസ്തകം വായിച്ചു. അവസാനം ഒരു പരീക്ഷ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. Notice that the two little copulas move with everything else: ആണ് becomes ആയിരുന്നു and ഉണ്ട് becomes ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. Learners very often shift the main verbs and leave ആണ് sitting there in the present, and that single word gives the whole paragraph away.
Three usage notes worth keeping. First, വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം is a formal Sanskrit-derived noun that lives in writing, newspapers and official forms; in conversation nobody asks about your വിദ്യാഭ്യാസം, they just ask നീ എന്ത് പഠിക്കുന്നു?. Second, കോളേജ് is an English loanword, and loanwords take the ordinary case endings without any fuss: കോളേജിൽ, കോളേജിന്റെ. Third, an exam in Malayalam is written, not taken or given: പരീക്ഷ എഴുതുക, നാളെ ഞാൻ പരീക്ഷ എഴുതും. And വിഷയം means both a school subject and the topic of a conversation.

Say four sentences about your own studies, all in the present: where you study, which subject, what you read every day, and when the next exam is. Then say the very same four sentences again in the past, changing every finite verb — and above all remembering ആണ് → ആയിരുന്നു and ഉണ്ട് → ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. If you have finished studying long ago, tell it in the past from the start. Record yourself once and listen for the one verb that slipped back into the wrong tense.
