Raju, could you help me for a moment?
Of course. What help do you need?
Would you pick up these books?
Here you are. What else do you need?
That's enough. That was a big help.
No trouble at all. Let me get the door too.
I am indebted to you.
Between friends there is no debt. Isn't that what our friendship is?
Explanation
Three ways to ask, from blunt to soft. സഹായിക്കൂ is the plain imperative — fine for a close friend or a child, abrupt for anyone else. സഹായിക്കുമോ? is the future plus the question -ഓ, and this is the everyday polite request you will use most. സഹായിക്കാമോ? uses the -ആം form plus -ഓ, and is the gentlest of the three: it asks whether helping would be possible rather than telling you to help. When in doubt with a stranger, reach for സഹായിക്കാമോ?
ഇത് എണ്ണം അല്ല — 'just a little' എന്ന അർഥം.
One small word does an enormous amount of work here: ഒന്ന്. Dropped in front of any request — ഒന്നു സഹായിക്കൂ, ഒന്നു നോക്കൂ, ഒന്ന് എടുക്കുമോ? — it stops being the number 'one' and becomes 'just for a moment', softening a command into a favour. To go the other way and offer help, ask സഹായം വേണോ? or simply state it with the -ആം form: ഞാൻ സഹായിക്കാം, 'let me help'.
These four nouns are not synonyms. സഹായം is help as an act — the thing you ask for. ഉപകാരം is the good turn once it has been done, which is why thanks so often sound like വലിയ ഉപകാരം ആയി, 'that turned into a big favour'. ബന്ധം is a connection of any kind at all — family, friendship, work, even between two countries. കടപ്പാട് is a felt obligation, the sense of owing someone; it ends in the half-u, so keep the candrakkala: കടപ്പാട്, not കടപ്പാടു. സൗഹൃദം itself is a slightly formal word; in ordinary talk people just say കൂട്ടുകാർ.

Practice
Use it
Take one request — asking someone to open a door, say — and put it through all three levels aloud: ഒന്നു സഹായിക്കൂ, then ഒന്നു സഹായിക്കുമോ?, then ഒന്നു സഹായിക്കാമോ?. Hear how the sentence gets gentler each time. Now switch sides and offer help twice: സഹായം വേണോ? and ഞാൻ സഹായിക്കാം. Close by thanking someone properly for something they actually did for you this week:
