മത്സരത്തിനു ശേഷം

ഹരി — ഇന്നലെ മത്സരം എങ്ങനെ ആയിരുന്നു?
How was the race yesterday?
ദിവ്യ — എനിക്ക് വിജയം കിട്ടിയില്ല. തോൽവി ആയിരുന്നു.
I didn't win. It was a defeat.
ഹരി — സാരമില്ല. നീ കുറേ ശ്രമിച്ചു, അല്ലേ?
Never mind. You tried a lot, didn't you?
ദിവ്യ — അതെ. ഞാൻ ദിവസവും രാവിലെ ഓടി.
Yes. I ran every morning.
ഹരി — ശ്രമം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട് ദുഃഖം വേണ്ട.
The effort was there. So there is no need to be sad.
ദിവ്യ — ദുഃഖം ഇല്ല. എന്റെ ലക്ഷ്യം അടുത്ത മത്സരം ആണ്.
I'm not sad. My goal is the next race.
ഹരി — നല്ലത്. ലക്ഷ്യം ഉണ്ട്, അതുകൊണ്ട് വിജയവും വരും.
Good. You have a goal, so the win will come too.
ദിവ്യ — നന്ദി, ഹരി!
Thank you, Hari!

വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

കാരണം ആദ്യം, ഫലം പിന്നെ — ഇടയിൽ അതുകൊണ്ട്. 'ഞാൻ കുറേ ശ്രമിച്ചു. അതുകൊണ്ട് വിജയം കിട്ടി.' മറിച്ചും പറയാം, അപ്പോൾ കാരണം എന്ന വാക്ക്: 'എനിക്ക് വിജയം കിട്ടി, കാരണം ഞാൻ കുറേ ശ്രമിച്ചു.'

Two sentences, one arrow between them. Put the cause first, close it with a full stop, then open the next sentence with അതുകൊണ്ട്: ഞാൻ കുറേ ശ്രമിച്ചു. അതുകൊണ്ട് വിജയം കിട്ടി. If you would rather give the result first, use കാരണം instead and the order flips: എനിക്ക് വിജയം കിട്ടി, കാരണം ഞാൻ കുറേ ശ്രമിച്ചു. Same two facts, same arrow — only the order of telling changes.

അതുകൊണ്ട് and അതിനാൽ both mean 'therefore', and they are not interchangeable in tone. അതുകൊണ്ട് is the everyday word and is at home anywhere — chatting, texting, an ordinary letter. അതിനാൽ belongs to formal written Malayalam: news reports, official notices, applications, essays. Saying അതിനാൽ to a friend over tea sounds like you are reading aloud from a notice board. Learn to hear both; produce അതുകൊണ്ട് until you are writing something formal.

ഈ പാഠത്തിലെ നാമങ്ങൾക്ക് ക്രിയകളും ഉണ്ട്: ശ്രമം — ശ്രമിക്കുക (ശ്രമിച്ചു); വിജയം — വിജയിക്കുക (വിജയിച്ചു); തോൽവി — തോൽക്കുക (തോറ്റു). തോറ്റു എന്ന ഭൂതരൂപം ഓർത്തുവയ്ക്കുക.

Each noun here has a verb beside it, and you can move between them freely. ശ്രമം goes with ശ്രമിക്കുക, past ശ്രമിച്ചു — a regular -ക്കുക verb with its -ച്ചു past. വിജയം goes with വിജയിക്കുക, past വിജയിച്ചു. തോൽവി goes with തോൽക്കുക, and this one is worth memorising on its own: the past is തോറ്റു, not the shape you would predict. Note also that ലക്ഷ്യം is a goal you aim at, while ആവശ്യം (next lesson) is a need.

അഭ്യാസം · Practice

ഞാൻ കുറേ ശ്രമിച്ചു. ________ വിജയം കിട്ടി. I tried a lot. Therefore I won.
'ഞാൻ ഒരുപാട് ________.' — ശരിയായ രൂപം ഏത്? I tried a lot.
വാക്യം ഉണ്ടാക്കുക — 'My goal is the next race.' Arrange the words.
നാമവും അർഥവും ചേർക്കുക. Match each noun to its meaning.

ഉപയോഗിക്കുക · Use it

Tell the story of one thing you have worked at, in exactly two sentences, cause first: ഞാൻ ദിവസവും മലയാളം പഠിച്ചു. അതുകൊണ്ട് ഇപ്പോൾ എനിക്ക് സംസാരിക്കാൻ കഴിയും. Now say the same two facts the other way round, result first, joined with കാരണം. Then name one goal out loud — എന്റെ ലക്ഷ്യം … ആണ് — and one defeat you are no longer upset about: അത് ഒരു തോൽവി ആയിരുന്നു, പക്ഷേ ശ്രമം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
