മുത്തശ്ശിയുടെ പഴഞ്ചൊല്ല്
Grandmother, the teacher said a proverb today.
Which proverb?
'The jasmine in the yard has no scent.' I did not understand it.
The words are easy: there is a jasmine plant in the yard, and it has no scent.
But jasmine flowers do have a lovely scent!
Exactly. A proverb says one thing and means another. We never notice the worth of the good things at home.
Now I understand! It is a piece of advice.
Yes. The old people used to say, there is no chaff in a proverb.
വിശദീകരണം · Explanation
പഴഞ്ചൊല്ല് പഴയ ആളുകളുടെ അനുഭവം ആണ്. അതിൽ കുറച്ചു വാക്കുകൾ മാത്രം; പക്ഷേ അതിൽ വലിയ അറിവ് ഉണ്ട്. ഓരോ പഴഞ്ചൊല്ലും രണ്ടു തവണ വായിക്കുക: ആദ്യം വാക്കുകൾ, പിന്നെ കാര്യം.
A പഴഞ്ചൊല്ല് is packed experience — a few words carrying a whole generation's knowledge. Read each one twice. The first reading is literal: a jasmine, a crow, a spoonful of nectar. The second reading is the one people actually mean. Malayalam speakers drop a proverb into ordinary conversation without explaining it, exactly as the grandmother does above.
Proverbs keep grammar that everyday speech has moved on from. കാക്കയ്ക്കും തൻകുഞ്ഞ് പൊൻകുഞ്ഞ് — 'to the crow too, its own chick is a golden chick' — has no ആണ് at all, and uses the old short genitive തൻ where you would now say തന്റെ. അധികമായാൽ അമൃതും വിഷം, 'in excess even nectar is poison', is verbless in the same way. Do not copy these shapes into your own sentences; recognise them and keep them whole.
The gain in learning proverbs is real: you can say a large thing in five words. But treat each one as a single unit. You may not swap a word, change the tense or add a subject — മുറ്റത്തെ മുല്ലയ്ക്ക് മണം ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു is not a proverb, just an odd sentence. Learn them the way you learned നമസ്കാരം: whole.

Say all four proverbs aloud, three times each, until they come out as one breath. Then pick your favourite and build three sentences round it: എനിക്ക് ഈ പഴഞ്ചൊല്ല് ഇഷ്ടം ആണ്, കാരണം … followed by a small story from your own life that proves it. That is exactly how a Malayalam speaker uses one.
