Position words like മുകളിൽ and താഴെ take the noun before them in the genitive.

വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

സ്ഥാനം പറയുന്ന വാക്കിനു മുൻപിലുള്ള നാമം സംബന്ധികയിൽ വരുന്നു — നേരത്തേ പഠിച്ച അടുത്ത്, അകത്ത്, മുന്നിൽ, പിന്നിൽ എന്നിവ പോലെ തന്നെ. സ്വരത്തിൽ അവസാനിക്കുന്ന വാക്കിന് -ഉടെ: മേശയുടെ, കസേരയുടെ, മുറിയുടെ. അല്ലെങ്കിൽ -ന്റെ: വീടിന്റെ, വാതിലിന്റെ, ജനലിന്റെ.

A position word is not a preposition standing in front, the way English 'on' or 'under' does. It comes after its noun, and that noun goes into the സംബന്ധിക (the -ഉടെ / -ന്റെ genitive from level 3) — exactly like അടുത്ത്, അകത്ത്, മുന്നിൽ, പിന്നിൽ which you already use. Vowel-final words take -ഉടെ: മേശയുടെ മുകളിൽ, കസേരയുടെ താഴെ, മുറിയുടെ നടുവിൽ. The rest take -ന്റെ: വീടിന്റെ പുറത്ത്, വാതിലിന്റെ വശത്ത്.

ഈ വാക്കുകൾ തന്നെ ആധാരികയിലുള്ള നാമങ്ങൾ ആണ്: മുകൾ + ഇൽ → മുകളിൽ; നടു + ഇൽ → നടുവിൽ; പുറം → പുറത്ത്; വശം → വശത്ത്. അതുകൊണ്ട് 'മേശയുടെ മുകളിൽ' എന്നാൽ 'മേശയുടെ മുകൾഭാഗത്ത്' എന്നു തന്നെ.

These words are themselves nouns wearing the ആധാരിക -ഇൽ ending: മുകൾ 'top' + ഇൽ → മുകളിൽ, നടു 'middle' + ഇൽ → നടുവിൽ (with the വ glide), പുറം 'outside' → പുറത്ത്, വശം 'side' → വശത്ത്. So മേശയുടെ മുകളിൽ is literally 'in the table's top' — which is why the genitive is there at all. താഴെ keeps its own shape and needs no -ഇൽ.

Used alone, with no noun in front, the same words are simple adverbs of place: പുറത്ത് മഴ പെയ്യുന്നു 'it is raining outside', താഴെ ഇരിക്കൂ 'sit down below', മുകളിൽ രണ്ടു മുറികൾ ഉണ്ട് 'there are two rooms upstairs'. Learn them in pairs: മുകളിൽ against താഴെ, and അകത്ത് against പുറത്ത്.
