Explanation

Inside a story the characters speak in their own words, exactly as in the last lesson: the words first, then എന്ന്, then പറഞ്ഞു, ചോദിച്ചു or വിചാരിച്ചു. Malayalam printing does use quotation marks, but they are optional decoration — എന്ന് is what really marks the end of the quoted words, and a thought is reported in exactly the same shape as a spoken line.

In level 3 you learned that people always take the -എ ending when they are the object. Animals in a story do the same: Watch the stem changes — മുയൽ becomes മുയലിനെ, കുറുക്കൻ becomes കുറുക്കനെ, സിംഹം becomes സിംഹത്തെ. Animal names ending in the chillu -ൻ (കുറുക്കൻ, കുരങ്ങൻ) are treated as masculine, and so is a doer-name like വേട്ടക്കാരൻ, 'hunter'.

This little tale uses everything from the last four lessons at once: ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു to open, -ഇട്ട് to chain the events (കണ്ടിട്ട് വന്നു, വിചാരിച്ചിട്ട് ഓടിപ്പോയി), -ഉമ്പോൾ for what happened at the same moment (നോക്കുമ്പോൾ കണ്ടു), and a participle in front for description (ബുദ്ധി ഉള്ള മുയൽ). Every folk tale ends with its ഗുണപാഠം, its moral, and here it is: ചെറിയ ആൾക്കും ബുദ്ധി കൊണ്ട് ജയിക്കാം — even a small one can win by wit.
