ഹരി എന്ത് പറഞ്ഞു?

അമ്മു — ഇന്ന് ഹരി എന്ത് പറഞ്ഞു?
What did Hari say today?
ദേവൻ — 'ഞാൻ നാളെ വരും' എന്ന് അവൻ പറഞ്ഞു.
He said, 'I will come tomorrow.'
അമ്മു — എപ്പോൾ വരും എന്ന് ചോദിച്ചോ?
Did you ask when he would come?
ദേവൻ — ചോദിച്ചു. രാവിലെ വരും എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു.
I did. He said he would come in the morning.
അമ്മു — അവൻ വരില്ല എന്ന് എനിക്ക് തോന്നുന്നു.
I don't think he will come.
ദേവൻ — എന്തുകൊണ്ട്? അവൻ വരും എന്ന് ഞാൻ വിചാരിച്ചു.
Why? I thought he would come.
അമ്മു — ഇന്നലെയും വരും എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു; പക്ഷേ വന്നില്ല.
Yesterday too he said he would come, but he didn't.
ദേവൻ — ശരി. ഞാൻ അവനെ വീണ്ടും വിളിക്കാം.
All right. I'll call him again.

വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

പറഞ്ഞ വാക്കുകൾ ആദ്യം വരുന്നു, പിന്നെ എന്ന്, ഒടുവിൽ ക്രിയ: 'ഞാൻ വരും എന്ന് അവൻ പറഞ്ഞു.' വാക്കുകൾ മാറ്റേണ്ട; പറഞ്ഞ ആൾ പറഞ്ഞതുപോലെ തന്നെ.

Malayalam reports speech in one order only: the words that were said, then എന്ന്, then the verb of saying. ഞാൻ വരും എന്ന് അവൻ പറഞ്ഞു is literally 'I will come — thus he said', and it is the ordinary way to say 'He said he would come'. Notice what does not happen: the quoted words are not adjusted at all. English shifts I to he and will to would; Malayalam leaves ഞാൻ വരും exactly as Hari spoke it and lets എന്ന് mark where the quote ends. അവൻ പറഞ്ഞു ഞാൻ വരും, with the verb first, is not Malayalam.

എന്ന് പല ക്രിയകളോടും ചേരും: പറഞ്ഞു, ചോദിച്ചു, വിചാരിച്ചു, കേട്ടു. ചോദ്യവും അതുപോലെ ഉള്ളിൽ നിൽക്കും: 'അവൻ വരുമോ എന്ന് ഞാൻ ചോദിച്ചു.' 'എപ്പോൾ വരും എന്ന് ചോദിച്ചു.'

എന്ന് works with any verb of speaking or thinking — പറഞ്ഞു, ചോദിച്ചു, വിചാരിച്ചു, കേട്ടു. A question keeps its question shape inside the quote: അവൻ വരുമോ എന്ന് ഞാൻ ചോദിച്ചു 'I asked whether he would come', with the -ഓ still on the verb; എപ്പോൾ വരും എന്ന് ചോദിച്ചു 'she asked when he would come'. For an opinion, use തോന്നുന്നു with a dative subject, the pattern you learned with വേണം: അവൻ വരില്ല എന്ന് എനിക്ക് തോന്നുന്നു is how a Malayali says 'I don't think he'll come'.

എന്ന് എന്നതിന്റെ പേരെച്ചം എന്ന ആണ്. അത് ഒരു പേരോ വാക്കോ നാമത്തോട് ചേർക്കുന്നു: മീര എന്ന കുട്ടി, കേരളം എന്ന നാട്, മലയാളം എന്ന ഭാഷ.

Just as വരുന്നു has the participle വരുന്ന, the quotative എന്ന് has the participle എന്ന — and it pins a name or a phrase onto the noun that follows: മീര എന്ന കുട്ടി 'a girl called Meera', കേരളം എന്ന നാട് 'the land called Kerala', മലയാളം എന്ന ഭാഷ 'the language called Malayalam'. One vowel is the whole difference between the two: എന്ന് closes a quote, എന്ന labels a noun.

ഉപയോഗിക്കുക · Use it

ഇന്ന് ആരെങ്കിലും പറഞ്ഞ ഒരു കാര്യം ഓർക്കുക. അത് ഇങ്ങനെ പറയുക: '… എന്ന് അവൻ പറഞ്ഞു.' പിന്നെ സ്വന്തം അഭിപ്രായവും: 'നാളെ മഴ പെയ്യും എന്ന് എനിക്ക് തോന്നുന്നു.'

Think of one thing somebody said to you today and report it out loud in the Malayalam order: … എന്ന് അവൻ പറഞ്ഞു or … എന്ന് അവൾ പറഞ്ഞു. Then add a question you asked — … എന്ന് ഞാൻ ചോദിച്ചു — and finish with an opinion of your own using നാളെ മഴ പെയ്യും എന്ന് എനിക്ക് തോന്നുന്നു. Keep the quoted words exactly as they were spoken; that is the whole trick.
