വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

വർത്തമാനക്രിയയുടെ അവസാനത്തെ 'ഉ' മാറ്റി 'അ' ചേർക്കുക: വരുന്നു → വരുന്ന, പോകുന്നു → പോകുന്ന, പഠിക്കുന്നു → പഠിക്കുന്ന, ഇരിക്കുന്നു → ഇരിക്കുന്ന. ഈ രൂപം നാമത്തിനു മുൻപിൽ നിൽക്കുന്നു: വരുന്ന ബസ്.

Take the plain present tense വരുന്നു and change its last vowel: വരുന്നു becomes വരുന്ന. That is the പേരെച്ചം, the relative participle, and it does the whole job of English who, which and that. Malayalam has no relative pronoun at all — the clause simply stands in front of its noun, right where an adjective would stand: വരുന്ന ബസ്, 'the bus that is coming'. Last lesson you built these from the past (വന്ന ആൾ); this is the same move on the present.

ഒരു വാക്യം മുഴുവനും നാമത്തിനു മുൻപിൽ നിൽക്കാം: ഞാൻ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്ന ബസ്, അച്ഛൻ വായിക്കുന്ന പത്രം, കടയിൽ ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്ന കുട്ടി. പേരെച്ചത്തിന് ലിംഗവും വചനവും ഇല്ല — എപ്പോഴും ഒരേ രൂപം.

The clause in front can be as long as you like: ഞാൻ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്ന ബസ് 'the bus I am waiting for', അച്ഛൻ വായിക്കുന്ന പത്രം 'the newspaper father reads'. English puts such a clause after the noun, Malayalam puts it before — that reversal is the only hard part. Notice too that the participle itself never changes: no gender, no number, no agreement, just വരുന്ന for everyone and everything.

The future has a participle too, and it is simply the future form itself: വരും ദിവസങ്ങൾ 'the days to come', വരും വർഷം 'the coming year'. You meet it mostly in writing and in the news; in speech the -ഉന്ന form covers the future as well — നാളെ വരുന്ന ബസ്. One verb refuses the -ഉന്ന pattern altogether: ഉണ്ട് has no present participle of its own and uses ഉള്ള instead — മേശയിൽ ഉള്ള പുസ്തകം, usually written joined as മേശയിലുള്ള പുസ്തകം. The same ഉള്ള builds adjectives out of nouns, as in ഉയരമുള്ള മരം.

അഭ്യാസം · Practice

'പഠിക്കുന്നു' എന്നതിന്റെ വർത്തമാന പേരെച്ചം ഏത്? Which is the present relative participle of പഠിക്കുന്നു?
'The bus that goes to town' — ശരിയായ വാക്യഭാഗം ഏത്? Which phrase is correct Malayalam?
മേശയിൽ ________ പുസ്തകം ഞാൻ വായിച്ചു. I read the book that was on the table.
വാക്യം ഉണ്ടാക്കുക — 'The bus I was waiting for came.' Arrange the words.
ചേർത്തു വായിക്കുക. Match the participle to its meaning.

ഉപയോഗിക്കുക · Use it

Look around you and name three things with a participle in front: അവിടെ ഇരിക്കുന്ന ആൾ, ഞാൻ വായിക്കുന്ന പുസ്തകം, മേശയിലുള്ള ഫോൺ. Then build each into a full sentence out loud — ഞാൻ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്ന ബസ് വരുന്നു — and say the same thing about a person: … പഠിക്കുന്ന കുട്ടി എന്റെ സുഹൃത്ത് ആണ്.
