വിശദീകരണം · Explanation
ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ who, which, that എന്നീ വാക്കുകൾ ഉണ്ട്. മലയാളത്തിൽ ആ വാക്കുകൾ ഇല്ല. പകരം ക്രിയ ഒരു ചെറിയ രൂപം എടുക്കുന്നു — പേരെച്ചം — വാക്യം മുഴുവൻ നാമത്തിനു മുൻപിൽ നിൽക്കുന്നു: ഇന്നലെ വന്ന ആൾ · ഞാൻ കണ്ട സിനിമ · അമ്മ പറഞ്ഞ കഥ.
English has who, which and that. Malayalam has no such word at all, and does not miss it. Instead the verb takes a short form called പേരെച്ചം, and the whole clause — subject, time word and all — stands in front of the noun it describes. ഇന്നലെ വന്ന ആൾ is 'the person who came yesterday'; ഞാൻ കണ്ട സിനിമ is 'the film I saw'; അമ്മ പറഞ്ഞ കഥ is 'the story mother told'. Read the Malayalam from the right and the English order appears.
The rule is small. Take the past tense and turn its last vowel into -അ: വന്നു → വന്ന, പറഞ്ഞു → പറഞ്ഞ, കണ്ടു → കണ്ട, ചെയ്തു → ചെയ്ത, പഠിച്ചു → പഠിച്ച, കഴിച്ചു → കഴിച്ച, കൊടുത്തു → കൊടുത്ത. Pasts that end in -ഇ add a യ instead: ഓടി → ഓടിയ, എഴുതി → എഴുതിയ, ഉറങ്ങി → ഉറങ്ങിയ. And പോയി gives പോയ — as in പോയ ബസ്, the bus that has gone, or പോയ ആഴ്ച, last week.
Like every other Malayalam verb form, the പേരെച്ചം records nothing about who did the action: ഞാൻ കണ്ട ആൾ, അവൾ കണ്ട ആൾ, അവർ കണ്ട ആൾ — one and the same form. The subject simply sits inside the clause in its plain form. And the clause may run as long as you like, because everything piles up to the left of the noun: ഇന്നലെ വൈകുന്നേരം വീട്ടിൽ വന്ന ആൾ, 'the person who came to the house yesterday evening'.

ഉപയോഗിക്കുക · Use it
ഇന്നലത്തെ കാര്യങ്ങൾ ഓർക്കുക. നാലു വാക്യം ഉറക്കെ പറയുക: 'ഇന്നലെ ഞാൻ കണ്ട ആൾ …' 'അമ്മ പറഞ്ഞ കഥ …' 'ഞാൻ ചെയ്ത ജോലി …' 'ഞാൻ പോയ സ്ഥലം …'
Think back over yesterday and finish four sentences aloud, each one starting with a clause that ends in a പേരെച്ചം: ഇന്നലെ ഞാൻ കണ്ട ആൾ …, അമ്മ പറഞ്ഞ കഥ …, ഞാൻ ചെയ്ത ജോലി …, ഞാൻ പോയ സ്ഥലം …. Then take three verbs you know well — കഴിക്കുക, വായിക്കുക, എഴുതുക — put each in the past, make its പേരെച്ചം, and hang a noun on the end: കഴിച്ച ഭക്ഷണം, വായിച്ച പുസ്തകം, എഴുതിയ കത്ത്.
