വിശദീകരണം · Explanation
Malayalam's ordinary plural is -കൾ, and it serves things and animals alike: പക്ഷി → പക്ഷികൾ, കോഴി → കോഴികൾ, കാക്ക → കാക്കകൾ, തത്ത → തത്തകൾ. A word ending in a consonant takes -ഉകൾ: മീൻ → മീനുകൾ, ആൾ → ആളുകൾ. A word ending in ം turns that ം into -ങ്ങൾ: മരം → മരങ്ങൾ, നക്ഷത്രം → നക്ഷത്രങ്ങൾ, പുസ്തകം → പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ. Three shapes, one job.
People often take a different plural, -മാർ, especially family words and titles: അമ്മ → അമ്മമാർ, ചേട്ടൻ → ചേട്ടന്മാർ, ഡോക്ടർ → ഡോക്ടർമാർ, അധ്യാപിക → അധ്യാപികമാർ. But not every word for a person does — കുട്ടി makes കുട്ടികൾ with the ordinary -കൾ. For now, treat -മാർ as the mark of kinship and title words and learn each one as you meet it; the full account waits for the grammar arc.
രണ്ടു ചെറിയ കാര്യം. ഒന്ന്: എണ്ണത്തിനു ശേഷം -കൾ വേണ്ട — അഞ്ചു കോഴി, മൂന്ന് പക്ഷി, പത്ത് മീൻ. രണ്ട്: -കൾ ചേർന്ന വാക്കിനും വാലുകൾ ചേരും — മീനുകളെ, കോഴികളെ, പക്ഷികളുടെ, അമ്മമാർക്ക്.
Two small points that save trouble. First, after a number you do not need the plural at all: അഞ്ചു കോഴി, മൂന്ന് പക്ഷി, പത്ത് മീൻ — the numeral has already said 'more than one', so the noun stays as it is, exactly as you saw with മൂന്ന് പുസ്തകം in level 3. Second, a plural word takes case endings just like a singular one: മീനുകളെ (the fish, as object), കോഴികളെ, പക്ഷികളുടെ (of the birds), അമ്മമാർക്ക് (to the mothers).

ഉപയോഗിക്കുക · Use it
Name what you saw today, out loud, in four sentences: മരത്തിൽ പക്ഷികൾ ഉണ്ട്, ഞാൻ രണ്ടു കാക്ക കണ്ടു, വീട്ടിൽ മൂന്ന് കോഴി ഉണ്ട്, ഞാൻ മീനുകളെ കണ്ടു. Then take five words you already know — പുസ്തകം, മരം, കുട്ടി, ഡോക്ടർ, ആൾ — and say each one's plural aloud, choosing between -കൾ and -മാർ as you go.
