മഴക്കാലം

It did not rain yesterday. Today it is really cold.  
 അനിൽ —  ഇത് മഴക്കാലം ആണ്. ഇപ്പോൾ എപ്പോഴും മഴ പെയ്യും. 
This is the rainy season. Now it will rain all the time.  
 രമ്യ —  എനിക്ക് ഒരു ചായ വേണം. 
I want a tea.  
 അനിൽ —  ശരി. അടുക്കളയിൽ തീ കത്തുന്നു. ചായ ഉടനെ വരും.

ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ 'it rains' — ആ 'it' ആര്? മലയാളത്തിൽ മഴ തന്നെ പെയ്യുന്നു. ഓരോ വാക്കിനും സ്വന്തം ക്രിയ ഉണ്ട്: മഴ പെയ്യുന്നു · കാറ്റ് വീശുന്നു · ഇടി വെട്ടുന്നു · മിന്നൽ മിന്നുന്നു · തീ കത്തുന്നു.

English needs a dummy subject — it rains, it is thundering — and nobody can say what that 'it' is. Malayalam names the thing itself and gives it a verb of its own. Rain rains: മഴ പെയ്യുന്നു. Wind blows: കാറ്റ് വീശുന്നു. Thunder strikes: ഇടി വെട്ടുന്നു. Lightning flashes: മിന്നൽ മിന്നുന്നു. Fire burns: തീ കത്തുന്നു. Learn each noun together with its verb, as one pair, and weather talk is done.

These verbs take the three tenses you already have, and no person ending ever appears on any of them: ഇന്നലെ മഴ പെയ്തു (it rained yesterday), ഇപ്പോൾ മഴ പെയ്യുന്നു (it is raining now), നാളെ മഴ പെയ്യും (it will rain tomorrow). Negate them the ordinary way: ഇന്ന് മഴ പെയ്തില്ല. കാറ്റ് runs വീശി · വീശുന്നു · വീശും, ഇടി runs വെട്ടി · വെട്ടുന്നു · വെട്ടും, and തീ runs കത്തി · കത്തുന്നു · കത്തും.

തണുപ്പ് ഒരു നാമം ആണ്, ക്രിയ അല്ല: 'ഇന്ന് തണുപ്പ് ഉണ്ട്.' 'എനിക്ക് തണുപ്പ് ഉണ്ട്.' മഴക്കാലം എന്ന വാക്ക് മഴ + കാലം ആണ്; രണ്ടു വാക്ക് ചേരുന്ന ഇടത്ത് 'ക' ഇരട്ടിക്കുന്നു — മഴക്കാലം.

തണുപ്പ് is a noun, 'cold' — not a verb and not an adjective. So you say ഇന്ന് തണുപ്പ് ഉണ്ട്, literally 'today there is cold', for 'it is cold today', and എനിക്ക് തണുപ്പ് ഉണ്ട് for 'I feel cold'. The name of the season is മഴ plus കാലം, and at the join the ക doubles: മഴക്കാലം. Malayalam does this doubling constantly where two words meet, so let your ear start noticing it.
