ഒരു രാത്രി, മുറ്റത്ത്

അമ്മു — മുറ്റത്ത് വരൂ! ഇന്ന് ആകാശത്ത് മേഘം ഇല്ല.
Come out to the yard! There is no cloud in the sky today.
ദേവൻ — ശരിയാണ്. ഇന്നലെ ആകാശത്ത് കറുത്ത മേഘം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
True. Yesterday there was a black cloud in the sky.
അമ്മു — ഇന്ന് ചന്ദ്രൻ വലുതാണ്.
The moon is big today.
ദേവൻ — നക്ഷത്രവും ഉണ്ട്. നീ എത്ര നക്ഷത്രം കാണുന്നു?
There are stars too. How many stars do you see?
അമ്മു — എനിക്ക് അറിയില്ല. ഞാൻ പത്ത് നക്ഷത്രം കണ്ടു.
I don't know. I counted ten.
ദേവൻ — രാവിലെ സൂര്യൻ വരും. അപ്പോൾ നക്ഷത്രം കാണില്ല.
In the morning the sun will come. Then you will not see the stars.
അമ്മു — സൂര്യനെ എപ്പോഴും കാണാം. ചന്ദ്രനെ ചിലപ്പോൾ കാണില്ല.
You can always see the sun. The moon you sometimes cannot.
ദേവൻ — അതെ. നാളെ രാവിലെ ഞാൻ ആകാശം വീണ്ടും നോക്കും.
Yes. Tomorrow morning I will look at the sky again.

വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

സ്ഥലം പറയാൻ -ഇൽ പഠിച്ചു: നഗരത്തിൽ, മുറിയിൽ, കടയിൽ. ചില വാക്കുകൾക്ക് -ത്ത് എന്ന ചെറിയ രൂപവും ഉണ്ട്: ആകാശം → ആകാശത്ത്, മുറ്റം → മുറ്റത്ത്. ആകാശത്തിന് ആ രൂപമാണ് ആളുകൾ പറയുന്നത്.

You already turn a noun into a place with -ഇൽ: നഗരത്തിൽ, മുറിയിൽ, കടയിൽ. A few ം-final words also have a shorter locative in -ത്ത്, and for the sky that is the one people actually say: ആകാശം gives ആകാശത്ത്, മുറ്റം gives മുറ്റത്ത്. So ആകാശത്ത് ഒരു മേഘം ഉണ്ട് — there is a cloud in the sky. ആകാശത്തിൽ is not wrong, only rarer.

Nouns that end in the chillu ൻ are normally men — അധ്യാപകൻ a teacher, മകൻ a son, കർഷകൻ a farmer. സൂര്യൻ and ചന്ദ്രൻ are not people at all, yet they carry the very same ending, because they came into Malayalam from Sanskrit, where the sun and the moon are gods. The practical result is that they take a man's endings: സൂര്യനെ as object, സൂര്യന്റെ for 'of the sun', സൂര്യന് for 'to the sun'. Keep ചന്ദ്രൻ and ചന്ദ്രന് apart in your spelling — a chillu and a സംവൃതോകാരം make two different words.

നക്ഷത്രം, മേഘം and ആകാശം all end in ം, so their endings arrive through -ത്ത് exactly as നഗരം did in level 3: നക്ഷത്രത്തെ, മേഘത്തിന്റെ, ആകാശത്തിന്. And the describing word, as always in Malayalam, stands in front and never changes shape: വലിയ ചന്ദ്രൻ, കറുത്ത മേഘം, ചെറിയ നക്ഷത്രം, വെളുത്ത ആകാശം.

ഉപയോഗിക്കുക · Use it

ഇന്ന് രാത്രി മുറ്റത്ത് നിൽക്കുക, ആകാശം നോക്കുക, നാലു വാക്യം ഉറക്കെ പറയുക: 'ആകാശത്ത് മേഘം ഉണ്ട്.' 'ഇന്ന് ചന്ദ്രൻ ചെറുതാണ്.' 'ഞാൻ നക്ഷത്രം കാണുന്നു.' 'നാളെ രാവിലെ സൂര്യൻ വരും.'

Tonight, stand outside, look up, and say four sentences aloud — ആകാശത്ത് മേഘം ഉണ്ട്, ഇന്ന് ചന്ദ്രൻ ചെറുതാണ്, ഞാൻ നക്ഷത്രം കാണുന്നു, നാളെ രാവിലെ സൂര്യൻ വരും. Then change each one to the past with ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു and കണ്ടു, and say what last night's sky was like.
