The story of one day

ഇന്നലെ, ഇന്ന്, നാളെ — ആദ്യം മുതൽ ഒടുവിൽ വരെ ഒരു ദിവസം പറയുന്നു.

Divya, what did you do yesterday?  
 ദിവ്യ —  ആദ്യം ഞാൻ രാവിലെ എഴുന്നേറ്റു. പിന്നെ ചായ കുടിച്ചു. 
First I got up in the morning. Then I drank tea.  
 അധ്യാപിക —  അതിന് ശേഷം? 
And after that?  
 ദിവ്യ —  രാവിലെ മുതൽ ഉച്ച വരെ ഞാൻ പഠിച്ചു. ഉച്ചയ്ക്ക് ചോറ് കഴിച്ചു. 
From morning until midday I studied. At midday I ate rice.  
 അധ്യാപിക —  വൈകുന്നേരം? 
And in the evening?  
 ദിവ്യ —  സുഹൃത്തിന്റെ കൂടെ കളിച്ചു. ഒടുവിൽ രാത്രി ഞാൻ ഉറങ്ങി. മൊത്തം അഞ്ചു കാര്യം ചെയ്തു. 
I played with my friend. Finally, at night, I slept. In all I did five things.  
 അധ്യാപിക —  ഇന്ന് എന്ത് ചെയ്യുന്നു? നാളെ എന്ത് ചെയ്യും? 
What are you doing today? What will you do tomorrow?  
 ദിവ്യ —  ഇന്ന് ഞാൻ ഒരു കത്ത് എഴുതുന്നു. നാളെ ആദ്യം പഠിക്കും; അവസാനം അമ്മയെ വിളിക്കും. 
Today I am writing a letter. Tomorrow I will study first; at the end I will call my mother.  

വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

കഥയുടെ ചട്ടക്കൂട്: ആദ്യം … പിന്നെ … അതിന് ശേഷം … ഒടുവിൽ. അവസാനം ഒടുവിൽ എന്ന അർഥത്തിലും 'the end' എന്ന നാമമായും വരുന്നു.

A day told in order needs only four signposts, and you already own two of them. ആദ്യം opens (first, at first), പിന്നെ and അതിന് ശേഷം carry the middle (then, after that), and ഒടുവിൽ closes (at last, finally). അവസാനം does the same closing work and is also a noun meaning 'the end', so you will meet it both as ഒടുവിൽ ഞാൻ ഉറങ്ങി and as അവസാനം ഞാൻ ഉറങ്ങി. Say them in this order and your listener never gets lost.

മുതൽ തുടക്കം കാണിക്കുന്നു, വരെ അവസാനം: 'രാവിലെ മുതൽ ഉച്ച വരെ', 'ഒന്ന് മുതൽ അഞ്ച് വരെ', 'ഇന്നലെ മുതൽ എനിക്ക് പനി ഉണ്ട്'. മൊത്തം എല്ലാം ചേർത്തു പറയുന്നു.

മുതൽ marks where something starts and വരെ, from level 3, marks where it stops. The pair works on times, on numbers and on places: രാവിലെ മുതൽ ഉച്ച വരെ, ഒന്ന് മുതൽ അഞ്ച് വരെ, വീട്ടിൽ നിന്ന് സ്കൂൾ വരെ. മുതൽ can also stand alone for a starting point that has not ended — ഇന്നലെ മുതൽ എനിക്ക് പനി ഉണ്ട്. And മൊത്തം adds everything up: മൊത്തം അഞ്ചു കാര്യം ചെയ്തു.

ഒരു കഥ, മൂന്നു കാലം. കാലപദം ക്രിയയെ തീരുമാനിക്കുന്നു: ഇന്നലെ ഞാൻ പഠിച്ചു · ഇന്ന് ഞാൻ പഠിക്കുന്നു · നാളെ ഞാൻ പഠിക്കും. ക്രിയയ്ക്ക് ആളും എണ്ണവും ഇല്ല — ഞാൻ, അവൾ, അവർ, എല്ലാവർക്കും ഒരേ രൂപം.

This is the whole of level 4 in one line. The time word chooses the tense and nothing else has to change: ഇന്നലെ ഞാൻ പഠിച്ചു, ഇന്ന് ഞാൻ പഠിക്കുന്നു, നാളെ ഞാൻ പഠിക്കും. Swap ഞാൻ for അവൾ or അവർ and the verbs stay exactly as they are — three tenses, four negators, വേണം, കഴിയും, -ആൽ and -ആം, and still not one ending table to memorise. That is the good news you were promised in l04-01.

Tell yesterday out loud in six sentences, using the frame: ആദ്യം ഞാൻ …, പിന്നെ …, രാവിലെ മുതൽ ഉച്ച വരെ …, വൈകുന്നേരം …, ഒടുവിൽ …, and sum it up with മൊത്തം … കാര്യം ചെയ്തു. Then tell the very same day again twice — once as today with the -ഉന്നു present, once as tomorrow with the -ഉം future. Nothing changes but the time word and the tail of the verb. That is level 4 finished.
