A phone call is the first conversation that needs all three tenses at once: what you did before, what is happening now, what will happen next. Watch one verb do the whole job — വിളിച്ചു (called), വിളിക്കുന്നു (is calling), വിളിക്കും (will call), വിളിക്കാം (may call, shall call), വിളിച്ചില്ല (did not call), വിളിക്കൂ (call!). And through all six, ഞാൻ, നീ, അവൻ and അവർ take exactly the same form.

Learn these as whole phrases. To ask for someone you do not use a verb for 'to speak' — you simply ask whether they exist there: ഹരി ഉണ്ടോ? The person answering asks ആരാണ്?, 'who is it?', and you name yourself: ഞാൻ മീരയാണ്. If nobody picked up, മറുപടി ഇല്ല. തിരികെ means 'back', so തിരികെ വിളിക്കും is 'will call back'. And ഒന്ന് കാത്തിരിക്കൂ is the everyday 'hold on a moment' — that little ഒന്ന് is not the number here, it is politeness.

മാന്യമായി മാറ്റിവയ്ക്കുക. 'ഇല്ല' എന്നു മാത്രം പറയേണ്ട. ഇങ്ങനെ പറയുക: 'ഇപ്പോൾ എനിക്ക് സമയം ഇല്ല. പിന്നീട് ഞാൻ വിളിക്കാം.' 'ഇപ്പോൾ കഴിയില്ല; വൈകുന്നേരം വിളിക്കാം.'

Malayalam telephone manners do not leave a bare ഇല്ല hanging. Give a reason and then hand over a future: ഇപ്പോൾ എനിക്ക് സമയം ഇല്ല. പിന്നീട് ഞാൻ വിളിക്കാം. Or ഇപ്പോൾ കഴിയില്ല; വൈകുന്നേരം വിളിക്കാം. The -ആം form from the last lesson is what makes this polite — വിളിക്കാം offers, while വിളിക്കും would simply announce. Close with നന്ദി, or with the other side's ഞങ്ങൾ കാത്തിരിക്കും.
