വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

ഭേദകം എപ്പോഴും നാമത്തിന്റെ മുൻപിൽ നിൽക്കുന്നു: വലിയ വീട്, വലിയ മേശ, വലിയ ആൺകുട്ടി, വലിയ പെൺകുട്ടി. നാലിടത്തും 'വലിയ' എന്ന ഒരേ രൂപം.

A Malayalam adjective — ഭേദകം — stands immediately before the noun it describes, and that is the only place it stands. It has one shape and one shape only: വലിയ വീട്, വലിയ മേശ, വലിയ ആൺകുട്ടി, വലിയ പെൺകുട്ടി. Masculine, feminine, neuter, one thing or many — വലിയ never moves. This is the same good news as the verb: no tables to learn.

വാൽ നാമത്തിൽ മാത്രം വരുന്നു, ഭേദകത്തിൽ വരുന്നില്ല: വലിയ വീട്ടിൽ, പഴയ വീടിന്റെ അടുത്ത്, നല്ല കുട്ടിയെ, പുതിയ അധ്യാപികയോട്. 'ഒരു' ഭേദകത്തിനും മുൻപിൽ: ഒരു വലിയ വീട്.

When the phrase takes a case ending, the ending goes on the noun and never on the adjective: വലിയ വീട്ടിൽ 'in the big house', പഴയ വീടിന്റെ അടുത്ത് 'near the old house', നല്ല കുട്ടിയെ 'the good child' as object, പുതിയ അധ്യാപികയോട് 'to the new teacher'. The little word ഒരു 'a, one' comes before the adjective, not after it: ഒരു വലിയ വീട്.

ഇന്നത്തെ മൂന്നു ജോഡി: വലിയ ↔ ചെറിയ, നല്ല ↔ ചീത്ത, പുതിയ ↔ പഴയ. പഴയ എന്നത് സാധനങ്ങൾക്ക് — പഴയ വീട്, പഴയ പുസ്തകം, പഴയ ബസ്.

Learn today's words as three pairs: വലിയ and ചെറിയ, നല്ല and ചീത്ത, പുതിയ and പഴയ. Two cautions. ചീത്ത is a strong word, used mostly of character and behaviour — ചീത്ത കുട്ടി; for a thing that is merely poor quality Malayalam prefers മോശം, which you will meet later. And പഴയ means old as against new, so it belongs to things: പഴയ വീട്, പഴയ ബസ്. A person's age is said another way, and that comes later too.
