Explanation

കാരണം does two jobs. As a noun it means 'reason' — ഇതാണ് കാരണം, that is the reason. As a joiner it means 'because', and it sits between the two clauses: Notice the order: the result comes first, then കാരണം, then the reason. That is the same order English uses.

അതുകൊണ്ട് turns the order around: reason first, result second. ബസ് വന്നില്ല, അതുകൊണ്ട് ഞാൻ നടന്നു — the bus didn't come, therefore I walked. So the same two facts can be joined either way, and you choose which one you want to put first. In writing you will also meet the long word എന്തുകൊണ്ടെന്നാൽ, 'because', built straight out of the question എന്തുകൊണ്ട്?

For a contrast you have two words. പക്ഷേ is the everyday 'but', at home in speech and in writing alike: എനിക്ക് സമയം ഉണ്ട്, പക്ഷേ പണം ഇല്ല. എന്നാൽ leans towards writing and towards a slightly more measured tone, and it often opens a fresh sentence rather than joining inside one: എന്നാൽ അവർ വന്നില്ല. If you are unsure which to use, പക്ഷേ is never wrong in conversation.

Practice

The bus didn't come, so I walked.
Which word puts the reason first and the result second?
I have time, but I have no money.
I did not come, because I had work.' Arrange the words.
Match each joiner to its job.

Use it

Pick one thing you did not do yesterday. Say it first with കാരണം — ഞാൻ … — and then say the very same two facts backwards with Hearing the pair back to back is what fixes the word order. Finish with one contrast:
