ആജ്ഞയ്ക്ക് -ഉക മാറ്റി -ഊ ചേർക്കുക: വരുക → വരൂ, ഇരിക്കുക → ഇരിക്കൂ, ചെയ്യുക → ചെയ്യൂ, നോക്കുക → നോക്കൂ, കേൾക്കുക → കേൾക്കൂ, പറയുക → പറയൂ, വായിക്കുക → വായിക്കൂ. ഇത് മര്യാദയുള്ള രൂപം.
To tell somebody to do something, drop the -ഉക of the dictionary form and add a long -ഊ: വരുക gives വരൂ, ഇരിക്കുക gives ഇരിക്കൂ, ചെയ്യുക gives ചെയ്യൂ, നോക്കുക gives നോക്കൂ, കേൾക്കുക gives കേൾക്കൂ, പറയുക gives പറയൂ. This is the courteous everyday command — the one you can safely use with a stranger, and the one you met with ദയവായി.
നിരോധിക്കാൻ -അരുത് ചേർക്കുക: പോകുക → പോകരുത്, ഓടുക → ഓടരുത്, ചെയ്യുക → ചെയ്യരുത്, പറയുക → പറയരുത്, കുടിക്കുക → കുടിക്കരുത്. ഒറ്റയ്ക്കും പറയാം: 'അരുത്!'
To forbid, add -അരുത് to the same stem: പോകരുത്, ഓടരുത്, ചെയ്യരുത്, പറയരുത്, കുടിക്കരുത്. It means 'you must not', and like every Malayalam verb form it is indifferent to who is being told — നീ പോകരുത്, നിങ്ങൾ പോകരുത്, അവർ പോകരുത്. On its own, അരുത്! is a complete sentence: Don't!
അരുത് വേറെ, വേണ്ട വേറെ. 'ഇപ്പോൾ പോകരുത്' — നിരോധം. 'ഇപ്പോൾ പോകേണ്ട' — ആവശ്യമില്ല എന്നു മാത്രം. 'എനിക്ക് ചായ വേണ്ട' — ഇഷ്ടമില്ല. അരുത് നാമത്തോട് ചേരില്ല.
Keep അരുത് and വേണ്ട apart. ഇപ്പോൾ പോകരുത് forbids: you must not go. ഇപ്പോൾ പോകേണ്ട only says there is no need — don't bother going. And വേണ്ട alone answers about a thing you do not want: എനിക്ക് ചായ വേണ്ട. അരുത് never works that way; it attaches to a verb and to nothing else.

Say three polite commands out loud, as if to a child in the house: ഇവിടെ വരൂ, ഇവിടെ ഇരിക്കൂ, പതുക്കെ നടക്കൂ. Then say three prohibitions with അരുത്: റോഡിൽ ഓടരുത്, വേഗം കുടിക്കരുത്, ഇപ്പോൾ പോകരുത്. Finally say the same last one softly with വേണ്ട — ഇപ്പോൾ പോകേണ്ട — and listen to how much gentler it lands.
