നിഷേധം ഒന്ന്: ഇല്ല ക്രിയയോട് ചേരുന്നു — പോയില്ല, പോകുന്നില്ല, പോകില്ല.

Negation 1: ഇല്ല fuses onto the verb in all three tenses.

വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

മലയാളത്തിൽ നിഷേധം ക്രിയയോട് ചേരുന്നു. ഭൂതകാലം: പോയി + ഇല്ല → പോയില്ല. വർത്തമാനകാലം: പോകുന്നു + ഇല്ല → പോകുന്നില്ല. ഭാവികാലം: പോകും → പോകില്ല.

Malayalam does not put a separate word like 'not' before the verb — ഇല്ല joins onto the end of it. Past: പോയി plus ഇല്ല gives പോയില്ല. Present: പോകുന്നു plus ഇല്ല gives പോകുന്നില്ല. Future is the one to watch: പോകും loses its -ഉം and becomes പോകില്ല, never പോകുമില്ല.

മറ്റു ക്രിയകളും അതേ വഴി: വന്നു → വന്നില്ല · വരുന്നു → വരുന്നില്ല · വരും → വരില്ല. കണ്ടു → കണ്ടില്ല · പഠിച്ചു → പഠിച്ചില്ല · പറഞ്ഞു → പറഞ്ഞില്ല. ഇവിടെയും ആൾക്കും എണ്ണത്തിനും ഒരേ രൂപം: ഞാൻ വന്നില്ല, അവർ വന്നില്ല.

Every verb behaves the same way: വന്നു gives വന്നില്ല, വരുന്നു gives വരുന്നില്ല, വരും gives വരില്ല. So do കണ്ടു → കണ്ടില്ല, പഠിച്ചു → പഠിച്ചില്ല, പറഞ്ഞു → പറഞ്ഞില്ല. And the negative forms are just as indifferent to person as the positive ones: ഞാൻ വന്നില്ല, അവൾ വന്നില്ല, അവർ വന്നില്ല.

ഒരിക്കലും എന്ന പദത്തിന് നിഷേധക്രിയ വേണം: 'ഞാൻ ഒരിക്കലും അവിടെ പോകില്ല.' ഒറ്റയ്ക്കുള്ള ഇല്ല പഴയതുപോലെ തന്നെ — 'ഇല്ല' എന്ന ഉത്തരം, 'പണം ഇല്ല' എന്ന വാക്യം.

ഒരിക്കലും means 'never', but only when a negative verb comes with it: ഞാൻ ഒരിക്കലും അവിടെ പോകില്ല. On its own ഇല്ല is still the ഇല്ല of level 1 — the word you answer 'no' with, and the word that denies existence in പണം ഇല്ല. What is new here is ഇല്ല glued to a verb.

Say three negative sentences about yourself, one in each tense: ഇന്നലെ ഞാൻ … പോയില്ല, ഇപ്പോൾ ഞാൻ … കഴിക്കുന്നില്ല, നാളെ ഞാൻ … വരില്ല. Then make one of them stronger with ഒരിക്കലും — ഞാൻ ഒരിക്കലും … ഇല്ല — and check that the verb still carries the negative on its own tail.
