Six very common verbs whose past forms follow no pattern and simply have to be learned.

Yes, I gave it. Mother gave me a present.  
 ലക്ഷ്മി —  ഞാൻ ഇന്നലെ അങ്ങാടിയിൽ നിങ്ങളുടെ ചേട്ടനെ കണ്ടു. 
I saw your elder brother at the market yesterday.  
 ഹരി —  അവൻ എന്ത് പറഞ്ഞു? 
What did he say?  
 ലക്ഷ്മി —  അവൻ നമസ്കാരം പറഞ്ഞു, സഞ്ചി എടുത്തു, ബസ്സിൽ പോയി. 
He said hello, picked up his bag and went off by bus.  

വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

ചില ക്രിയകൾ ഒരു നിയമവും പിന്തുടരുന്നില്ല. ഇവ ആറെണ്ണം ദിവസവും വേണം: പറയുക → പറഞ്ഞു, ചെയ്യുക → ചെയ്തു, കാണുക → കണ്ടു, കൊടുക്കുക → കൊടുത്തു, എടുക്കുക → എടുത്തു, എഴുതുക → എഴുതി. ഏഴാമത്തേത് 'കേൾക്കുക → കേട്ടു'.

A handful of verbs answer to no pattern at all; you simply learn the past form as a second word. These six carry most of the traffic in everyday speech: പറയുക → പറഞ്ഞു (said), ചെയ്യുക → ചെയ്തു (did), കാണുക → കണ്ടു (saw), കൊടുക്കുക → കൊടുത്തു (gave), എടുക്കുക → എടുത്തു (took), എഴുതുക → എഴുതി (wrote). Add കേൾക്കുക → കേട്ടു (heard) and you have seven. Say each pair aloud together — the verb, then its past — until the second one arrives without thinking.

ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുക: 'കൊടുക്കുക', 'എടുക്കുക' എന്നിവയിൽ -ക്കുക ഉണ്ട്; എന്നിട്ടും ഭൂതരൂപം -ച്ചു അല്ല, -ത്തു ആണ്. കഴിക്കുക → കഴിച്ചു; എടുക്കുക → എടുത്തു.

Watch the two that look like last lesson's group. കൊടുക്കുക and എടുക്കുക both end in -ക്കുക, yet their past is -ത്തു, not -ച്ചു: കൊടുത്തു and എടുത്തു. Set them side by side with കഴിക്കുക → കഴിച്ചു and the difference stops being a trap. The reliable -ച്ചു group is the one whose citation form ends in -ഇക്കുക.

'എഴുതുക → എഴുതി' എന്നത് ലളിതമാണ് — -ഇ മാത്രം. 'എഴുത്തു' എന്നത് ക്രിയ അല്ല. ചോദ്യരൂപം: പറഞ്ഞോ? ചെയ്തോ? കണ്ടോ? കൊടുത്തോ? എടുത്തോ? എഴുതിയോ?

എഴുതുക is the easy one of the six: plain -ഇ gives എഴുതി, with no doubling and no ത്ത്. It sits in this lesson only because it stands so close to എടുത്തു that learners mix them up. Questions are built as before: പറഞ്ഞോ?, ചെയ്തോ?, കണ്ടോ?, കൊടുത്തോ?, എടുത്തോ? — and after the -ഇ of എഴുതി the glide returns: എഴുതിയോ?

ഇന്നലെ ഞാൻ അങ്ങാടിയിൽ ചേട്ടനെ ________. (കാണുക) Complete with the past of കാണുക: 'Yesterday I saw my brother at the market.'

വാക്യം ഉണ്ടാക്കുക — 'Hari wrote a letter to mother.' Arrange the words.

ആറു ജോടികൾ ഉറക്കെ പറയുക — 'പറയുക, പറഞ്ഞു; ചെയ്യുക, ചെയ്തു; കാണുക, കണ്ടു; കൊടുക്കുക, കൊടുത്തു; എടുക്കുക, എടുത്തു; എഴുതുക, എഴുതി.' പിന്നെ മൂന്നു വാക്യം പറയുക: 'ഞാൻ ഇന്നലെ … കണ്ടു. ഞാൻ … പറഞ്ഞു. ഞാൻ … എഴുതി.'

Chant the six pairs out loud until the second half comes by itself: പറയുക–പറഞ്ഞു, ചെയ്യുക–ചെയ്തു, കാണുക–കണ്ടു, കൊടുക്കുക–കൊടുത്തു, എടുക്കുക–എടുത്തു, എഴുതുക–എഴുതി. Then use three of them on your own day: ഞാൻ ഇന്നലെ … കണ്ടു · ഞാൻ അമ്മയോട് … പറഞ്ഞു · ഞാൻ ഒരു കത്ത് എഴുതി. Finish by asking someone നിങ്ങൾ ഇന്നലെ എന്ത് ചെയ്തു? — the single most useful question in this level.
