വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

-ഇക്കുക യിൽ അവസാനിക്കുന്ന ക്രിയകൾ ധാരാളം ഉണ്ട്. അവയുടെ ഭൂതകാലം എളുപ്പമാണ്: -ഇക്കുക മാറ്റി -ഇച്ചു വെക്കുക. പഠിക്കുക → പഠിച്ചു, കുടിക്കുക → കുടിച്ചു, കളിക്കുക → കളിച്ചു, വായിക്കുക → വായിച്ചു, കഴിക്കുക → കഴിച്ചു.

A very large group of Malayalam verbs ends in -ഇക്കുക, and they all make their past the same way: take off -ഇക്കുക and put -ഇച്ചു in its place. പഠിക്കുക → പഠിച്ചു, കുടിക്കുക → കുടിച്ചു, കളിക്കുക → കളിച്ചു, വായിക്കുക → വായിച്ചു, കഴിക്കുക → കഴിച്ചു. Learn the swap once and you have the past of hundreds of verbs, and — as always — a single form covering ഞാൻ, നീ, അവൻ, അവൾ and അവർ alike.

ലെവൽ രണ്ടിലെ ക്രിയകളും ഇങ്ങനെ തന്നെ: കുളിക്കുക → കുളിച്ചു, വിളിക്കുക → വിളിച്ചു, ധരിക്കുക → ധരിച്ചു. ഒരു അപവാദം ഓർക്കുക: 'ഇരിക്കുക' എന്നതിന്റെ ഭൂതരൂപം 'ഇരുന്നു' ആണ്, 'ഇരിച്ചു' അല്ല.

The verbs you already know from level 2 follow suit: കുളിക്കുക → കുളിച്ചു, വിളിക്കുക → വിളിച്ചു, ധരിക്കുക → ധരിച്ചു. One exception is worth pinning down now, because it is a common word — ഇരിക്കുക looks like the rest but gives ഇരുന്നു, which you met in the last lesson. There is no ഇരിച്ചു.

ചോദ്യമാക്കാൻ -ഓ ചേർക്കുക: പഠിച്ചു + ഓ → പഠിച്ചോ? കഴിച്ചു + ഓ → കഴിച്ചോ? 'നിങ്ങൾ ഭക്ഷണം കഴിച്ചോ?' എന്നത് കേരളത്തിൽ എപ്പോഴും കേൾക്കുന്ന ചോദ്യം.

Add -ഓ and you have the question: പഠിച്ചോ?, കഴിച്ചോ?, കുടിച്ചോ?. The -ഉ simply gives way to -ഓ. And do learn നിങ്ങൾ ഭക്ഷണം കഴിച്ചോ? by heart: asking whether someone has eaten is a standard piece of Kerala courtesy, closer to 'how are you doing' than to a real enquiry about food.
