Simple past forms

The plain past: verbs that end their past in -ഇ, and verbs that end it in -ന്നു.

ഭൂതകാലത്തിന് രണ്ടു ലളിതമായ രൂപങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട്. ഒന്ന്: -ഇ ചേരുന്നു — ഓടുക → ഓടി, ഉറങ്ങുക → ഉറങ്ങി, വാങ്ങുക → വാങ്ങി. രണ്ട്: -ന്നു ചേരുന്നു — നടക്കുക → നടന്നു, ഇരിക്കുക → ഇരുന്നു, നിൽക്കുക → നിന്നു.
Most everyday verbs build their past in one of two shapes. The first simply adds -ഇ: ഓടുക → ഓടി, ഉറങ്ങുക → ഉറങ്ങി, വാങ്ങുക → വാങ്ങി. The second ends in a doubled -ന്നു: നടക്കുക → നടന്നു, ഇരിക്കുക → ഇരുന്നു, നിൽക്കുക → നിന്നു — and വന്നു from the last lesson belongs here too. There is no person ending on either shape, so ഞാൻ ഓടി and അവർ ഓടി are word for word the same verb.
ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുക: 'ഇരിക്കുക', 'നിൽക്കുക' എന്നിവയിൽ -ക്കുക ഉണ്ട്; ഭൂതരൂപം ഇരുന്നു, നിന്നു. 'നിൽ' എന്നതിലെ ചില്ല് 'ൽ' 'ന്ന' ആയി മാറുന്നു: നിൽക്കുക → നിന്നു.
Two of these deserve a second look. ഇരിക്കുക and നിൽക്കുക are written with -ക്കുക, yet their past is ഇരുന്നു and നിന്നു — not what the next lesson's -ച്ചു group does. In നിന്നു the chillu ൽ has been swallowed into the ന്ന; write നിന്നു, never നിൽന്നു. These two are worth memorising as a pair, because both turn up in almost every conversation.
ചോദ്യമാക്കാൻ -ഓ ചേർക്കുക: ഓടി + ഓ → ഓടിയോ? നടന്നു + ഓ → നടന്നോ? ഉറങ്ങി + ഓ → ഉറങ്ങിയോ? -ഇ യ്ക്കു ശേഷം ഒരു 'യ' വരുന്നു.
To turn any of these into a yes-or-no question, add the -ഓ you met in level 1: നടന്നു → നടന്നോ?, ഇരുന്നു → ഇരുന്നോ?. After a past in -ഇ the familiar glide slips in first: ഓടി → ഓടിയോ?, ഉറങ്ങി → ഉറങ്ങിയോ?. Two vowels still refuse to sit side by side in Malayalam.

Tell yesterday in five sentences, out loud: ഇന്നലെ ഞാൻ വീട്ടിൽ ഇരുന്നു · ഞാൻ വഴിയിൽ നടന്നു · ഞാൻ മൈതാനത്തിൽ ഓടി · ഞാൻ കടയിൽ നിന്നു · രാത്രി ഞാൻ ഉറങ്ങി. Then say the same five with അവൾ instead of ഞാൻ and check that not one verb moved. Finish by asking a friend the question form: ഇന്നലെ നിങ്ങൾ ഓടിയോ? ഇന്നലെ നിങ്ങൾ നടന്നോ?
