വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

'പോകുക' എന്ന ക്രിയയുടെ ഭൂതകാലം 'പോയി'. 'വരുക' എന്നതിന്റേത് 'വന്നു'. ഇന്നലെ നടന്ന കാര്യം പറയാൻ ഈ രൂപം മതി.

Malayalam marks the past on the verb itself: പോകുക (to go) gives പോയി (went), വരുക (to come) gives വന്നു (came). Put it at the end of the sentence, exactly where പോകുന്നു stood in level 2, and the whole sentence moves to yesterday.

ഇവിടെ ഒരു സന്തോഷവാർത്ത: ഞാൻ പോയി · നീ പോയി · അവൻ പോയി · അവൾ പോയി · ഞങ്ങൾ പോയി · അവർ പോയി. ആൾ മാറിയാലും ക്രിയ മാറുന്നില്ല.

Now the good news, and it is the biggest single fact about Malayalam verbs: ഞാൻ പോയി · നീ പോയി · അവൻ പോയി · അവൾ പോയി · ഞങ്ങൾ പോയി · അവർ പോയി. One form, unchanged, for every person, number and gender. Tamil says போனேன் for 'I went' and போனார்கள் for 'they went'; Malayalam gave all that up. There is no ending table here and there never will be — learn പോയി once and you have the whole past of that verb.

ക്രിയ ആളെ കാണിക്കാത്തതുകൊണ്ട് കർത്താവിനെ പറയണം. 'പോയി' മാത്രം പറഞ്ഞാൽ ആരു പോയി എന്ന് അറിയില്ല; 'ഞാൻ പോയി' എന്നു പറയുക. 'ഇന്നലെ', 'ഇന്ന്', 'നാളെ' എന്നീ വാക്കുകൾക്ക് വാൽ വേണ്ട.

Because the verb hides the person, the subject has to be spoken: ഞാൻ പോയി, not bare പോയി. The three time words take no case ending at all — ഇന്നലെ, ഇന്ന്, നാളെ simply stand at the front. And notice രാജു's last line: നാളെ ഞാൻ പോകുന്നു. For a plan already settled, present-tense -ഉന്നു is perfectly ordinary Malayalam. The dedicated future form is waiting for you a few lessons ahead.

അഭ്യാസം · Practice

'They went' — ശരിയായ വാക്യം ഏത്? Which sentence means 'they went'?
'വരുക' എന്നതിന്റെ ഭൂതകാലം ഏത്? What is the past tense of വരുക?
ഇന്നലെ ഞാൻ കടയിൽ ________. Complete: 'Yesterday I went to the shop.'
വാക്യം ഉണ്ടാക്കുക — 'Yesterday she came home.' Arrange the words.
ചേർത്തു വായിക്കുക. Match the word to its meaning.

ഉപയോഗിക്കുക · Use it

ഇനി ഉറക്കെ പറയുക: 'ഇന്നലെ ഞാൻ … പോയി.' സ്ഥലം മാറ്റി മൂന്നു തവണ പറയുക. പിന്നെ കർത്താവ് മാറ്റുക: 'ഇന്നലെ അമ്മ പോയി. ഇന്നലെ അവർ പോയി.' ക്രിയ ഒന്നുതന്നെ എന്നു ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുക.

Say it aloud now, three times, changing the place each time: ഇന്നലെ ഞാൻ കടയിൽ പോയി · ഇന്നലെ ഞാൻ സ്കൂളിൽ പോയി · ഇന്നലെ ഞാൻ അങ്ങാടിയിൽ പോയി. Then keep the sentence and swap only the subject — ഇന്നലെ അമ്മ പോയി, ഇന്നലെ അവൻ പോയി, ഇന്നലെ അവർ പോയി — and listen to the verb staying exactly where it was. Finish with today and tomorrow: ഇന്ന് ഞാൻ സ്കൂളിൽ പോകുന്നു. നാളെ ഞാൻ അങ്ങാടിയിൽ പോകുന്നു.
