Hello! Is there rice here?
Hello! Yes. There is rice, milk and sugar.
I am buying two kilos of rice. What does the rice cost?
Forty rupees for one kilo of rice.
I am buying a litre of milk too.
Eighty rupees for the rice, twenty for the milk — a hundred rupees.
I am giving two hundred rupees. How much is the change?
The change is a hundred rupees. The goods are in the bag. Thank you!
Explanation
A measure word sits between the numeral and the thing measured: രണ്ട് കിലോ അരി (two kilos of rice), ഒരു ലിറ്റർ പാൽ (one litre of milk), അഞ്ചു കിലോ പഞ്ചസാര. Malayalam needs no word for 'of' here — the three words simply stand in a row. And like രൂപ in the last lesson, കിലോ and ലിറ്റർ never change shape after a numeral.
Four case endings are at work in one short conversation. ഉദ്ദേശിക gives the thing a price is set for: അരിക്ക് എൺപത് രൂപ, പാലിന് ഇരുപത് രൂപ — note that പാൽ takes -ന് and becomes പാലിന്, while അരി takes -ക്ക്. സംബന്ധിക -ഉടെ ties the price to the goods: അരിയുടെ വില. And സംയോജിക -ഓട് marks the person you are talking to: മീര കച്ചവടക്കാരനോട് പറയുന്നു. The chillu ൻ of കച്ചവടക്കാരൻ becomes ന before every one of these endings.
Three questions run almost every purchase. ഉണ്ടോ? asks whether the shop has it. വില എത്ര? asks the price. ബാക്കി എത്ര? asks for the change — ബാക്കി is simply 'what is left over', the money that comes back to your hand. A സഞ്ചി is the cloth or plastic carry-bag you take with you; സാധനം സഞ്ചിയിൽ ഉണ്ട് is what the shopkeeper says as he hands it over.

Act out the whole purchase aloud, playing both parts. Choose a real thing you would buy, then run the three moves: നമസ്കാരം! Do it twice, once buying rice by the kilo and once buying milk by the litre, and let the change come out right.
