ഒന്ന്, രണ്ട്, മൂന്ന്, നാല്, അഞ്ച് — ഇവയാണ് ആദ്യത്തെ അഞ്ചു സംഖ്യകൾ. ഒറ്റയ്ക്ക് സംഖ്യയുടെ രൂപം ഇതു തന്നെ.
One to five: ഒന്ന് (onnu), രണ്ട് (raṇṭu), മൂന്ന് (mūnnu), നാല് (nālu), അഞ്ച് (añcu). This is the form you use when you are simply counting out loud, and it is the form you answer with when someone asks എത്ര? Four of the five end in the short closed സംവൃതോകാരം — the little ് you already know from അത് and ഉണ്ട്.
നാമത്തിന്റെ മുന്നിൽ 'ഒന്ന്' 'ഒരു' ആകുന്നു: ഒരു പുസ്തകം, ഒരു വീട്, ഒരു കട. രണ്ട് മുതൽ അഞ്ച് വരെ മാറ്റമില്ല: രണ്ട് പേന, മൂന്ന് പുസ്തകം, അഞ്ച് കട.
Only ഒന്ന് changes shape. Standing in front of a noun it becomes ഒരു — ഒരു പുസ്തകം, ഒരു വീട്, ഒരു കട — and that is also Malayalam's way of saying 'a book, a house, a shop'. Two to five never change: രണ്ട് പേന, മൂന്ന് പുസ്തകം, അഞ്ച് കട. The noun does not change either: മൂന്ന് പുസ്തകം is 'three books', with the noun in its plain form. In careful writing the numeral often takes a final -ഉ before the noun: മൂന്നു പുസ്തകം, അഞ്ചു കട. Both spellings are correct.
ആളുകൾക്ക് 'പേർ' ചേർക്കുന്നു: രണ്ടു പേർ, അഞ്ചു പേർ. ചോദ്യം ഇങ്ങനെ — 'എത്ര പേർ ഉണ്ട്?'
When you count people, Malayalam adds പേർ after the numeral: രണ്ടു പേർ (two people), മൂന്നു പേർ, അഞ്ചു പേർ. So you ask എത്ര പേർ ഉണ്ട്? for people, and എത്ര പുസ്തകം ഉണ്ട്? for things. Notice that പേർ ends in the chillu ർ.

Look around the room and count five things out loud: ഒന്ന്, രണ്ട്, മൂന്ന്, നാല്, അഞ്ച്. Then build three real sentences about what is actually in front of you — മേശയിൽ … പുസ്തകം ഉണ്ട്, എന്റെ കൈയിൽ ഒരു ഫോൺ ഉണ്ട്, ഇവിടെ … പേർ ഉണ്ട്. Say each one twice, and remember to switch ഒന്ന് to ഒരു the moment a noun follows it.
