വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

പറയുക, ചോദിക്കുക, സംസാരിക്കുക — ഈ ക്രിയകളിൽ ആൾക്ക് -ഓട് എന്ന വാൽ വരുന്നു. ഇത് സംയോജിക വിഭക്തി: അമ്മയോട്, അച്ഛനോട്, അധ്യാപികയോട്, സുഹൃത്തിനോട്.

When you say something, ask something or talk with somebody, that person takes the tail -ഓട്. This is the സംയോജിക case. English uses to or with here: ഞാൻ അമ്മയോട് പറയുന്നു — I tell mother. The word order is subject, then the -ഓട് person, then what is said, then the verb.

വാക്കിന്റെ അവസാനം അനുസരിച്ച് രൂപം മാറുന്നു. സ്വരത്തിൽ അവസാനിക്കുന്നു എങ്കിൽ -യോട്: അമ്മ → അമ്മയോട്, കുട്ടി → കുട്ടിയോട്. ചില്ല് ൻ ആണെങ്കിൽ -നോട്: അച്ഛൻ → അച്ഛനോട്, മകൻ → മകനോട്, അയൽക്കാരൻ → അയൽക്കാരനോട്. ചില്ല് ൾ, ർ ആണെങ്കിൽ -ഓട് നേരിട്ട്: മകൾ → മകളോട്, അവർ → അവരോട്.

The ending takes three shapes. After a vowel it is -യോട് (അമ്മയോട്, കുട്ടിയോട്, അധ്യാപികയോട്). After the chillu ൻ the ൻ opens up to ന and you get -നോട് (അച്ഛനോട്, മകനോട്). After ൾ and ർ the ending simply follows (മകളോട്, അവരോട്, നിങ്ങളോട്). Words like സുഹൃത്ത് take a small ഇൻ first: സുഹൃത്തിനോട്.

സർവനാമങ്ങൾ: ഞാൻ → എന്നോട്, നീ → നിന്നോട്, നിങ്ങൾ → നിങ്ങളോട്, അവൻ → അവനോട്, അവൾ → അവളോട്, അവർ → അവരോട്. -ക്ക് വേറെ, -ഓട് വേറെ: അമ്മയ്ക്ക് പണം കൊടുക്കുന്നു, അമ്മയോട് പറയുന്നു.

The pronouns are worth learning as a block: എന്നോട്, നിന്നോട്, നിങ്ങളോട്, അവനോട്, അവളോട്, അവരോട്. Keep -ഓട് apart from the dative -ക്ക് you met in l03-05: you give money to mother (അമ്മയ്ക്ക് പണം കൊടുക്കുന്നു) but you speak to mother (അമ്മയോട് പറയുന്നു). Things you hand over take -ക്ക്; words you say take -ഓട്.

Think of four people in your life — your mother, your father, a friend, a teacher — and say one sentence about each aloud, putting the person in the -ഓട് form: ഞാൻ അമ്മയോട് പറയുന്നു, ഞാൻ സുഹൃത്തിനോട് ചോദിക്കുന്നു, ഞാൻ അധ്യാപികയോട് സംസാരിക്കുന്നു. Then swap the subject to അവൻ, അവൾ and അവർ — the verb does not change at all.
