Explanation
സംബന്ധിക, the genitive, is the ending that says whose. Its word order is the friendly one for an English speaker: the owner comes first with -ഉടെ on it, then the thing owned. അമ്മയുടെ കൈ is mother's hand, ചേച്ചിയുടെ പുസ്തകം is elder sister's book. Nothing at all happens to the second word.
On words ending in a vowel the glide യ appears and you hear -യുടെ: അമ്മ → അമ്മയുടെ, ചേച്ചി → ചേച്ചിയുടെ, കുട്ടി → കുട്ടിയുടെ, മുത്തശ്ശി → മുത്തശ്ശിയുടെ, അധ്യാപിക → അധ്യാപികയുടെ. The question word joins in without a glide: ആര് → ആരുടെ, whose. — whose umbrella is this? Next lesson deals with the words that end in the chillu ൻ, which take a different shape.
Malayalam names the owner when it talks about a body part — അമ്മയുടെ കണ്ണ്, കുട്ടിയുടെ മുടി — where English would often say the eye or the hair. Two of these words are broader than their English translations: കൈ covers hand and arm together, and കാൽ covers leg and foot together. And when കൈ takes the locative, writing gives കൈയിൽ while ordinary speech says കയ്യിൽ; both are heard, and you should write the first.

Find a family photograph. Point at one person after another and say it out loud: Five sentences is enough. Then hold the photo up and ask the question that opened today's dialogue — ഇത് ആരുടെ ചിത്രം? — and answer it yourself.
