വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

കടയിൽ, സ്കൂളിൽ എന്ന അതേ വാൽ വാഹനത്തിലും വരുന്നു: ബസ്സിൽ, ട്രെയിനിൽ, വണ്ടിയിൽ, തോണിയിൽ. മലയാളത്തിൽ 'ബസിനുള്ളിൽ' എന്നും 'ബസ് വഴി' എന്നും വേറെ വേറെ പറയേണ്ട; ഒരു വാൽ മതി.

The ending you learned for places does double duty. English keeps two ideas apart — sitting in the bus, and travelling by bus — but Malayalam sees one situation and marks it once: ബസ്സിൽ. So ഞാൻ ബസ്സിൽ പോകുന്നു is I go by bus, and അവൾ ട്രെയിനിൽ പോകുന്നു is she goes by train. Nothing extra is needed.

ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ നിന്നു വന്ന വാക്കുകൾ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുക. ബസ് → ബസ്സിൽ; 'സ' ഇരട്ടിക്കുന്നു. ട്രെയിൻ → ട്രെയിനിൽ; ചില്ല് 'ൻ' 'ന' ആയി മാറുന്നു. റോഡ് → റോഡിൽ. വണ്ടി, തോണി എന്നിവയ്ക്ക് 'യ' വരുന്നു: വണ്ടിയിൽ, തോണിയിൽ.

Watch how the borrowed words behave. ബസ് doubles its സ before the ending: ബസ്സിൽ. ട്രെയിൻ ends in the chillu ൻ, which relaxes into ന: ട്രെയിനിൽ. റോഡ് simply takes it: റോഡിൽ. And the two Malayalam words here end in vowels, so they call in the glide യ, exactly as കട did: വണ്ടിയിൽ, തോണിയിൽ. വണ്ടി is a useful old word — it covered the bullock cart and now covers the car.

സമയത്തിനും ഇതേ വാൽ ഉപയോഗിക്കാം: രാത്രിയിൽ ഞാൻ ഉറങ്ങുന്നു. പക്ഷേ ചില സമയവാക്കുകൾ വാലില്ലാതെ നിൽക്കുന്നു — രാവിലെ, ഉച്ച, വൈകുന്നേരം, പകൽ. 'രാവിലെയിൽ' എന്നു പറയാറില്ല.

Points in time take -ഇൽ too: രാത്രിയിൽ ഞാൻ ഉറങ്ങുന്നു, at night I sleep. But a handful of time words are already complete and refuse any ending — രാവിലെ, ഉച്ച, വൈകുന്നേരം, പകൽ. You say രാവിലെ ഞാൻ എഴുന്നേൽക്കുന്നു with nothing on the end, and രാവിലെയിൽ is simply not Malayalam. Keep those four bare, and let the rest take the tail.

Say aloud how you travel to work or to class — ഞാൻ ബസ്സിൽ പോകുന്നു, ഞാൻ ട്രെയിനിൽ പോകുന്നു, ഞാൻ വണ്ടിയിൽ പോകുന്നു, or, if you walk, ഞാൻ നടക്കുന്നു with no ending at all. Then say the same sentence about three other people, changing only the subject: അവൻ, അവൾ, അമ്മ. The verb stays exactly as it is — it always does.
