The dative on pronouns — and why അവൻ and അവന് are two different words.

ഉദ്ദേശിക വിഭക്തി സർവനാമങ്ങളിലും വരുന്നു. ഞാൻ → എനിക്ക്, നീ → നിനക്ക്. ഈ രണ്ടു രൂപവും വാക്ക് അതേപടി നിർത്തി വാൽ ചേർത്തതല്ല; ഇവ അങ്ങനെതന്നെ പഠിക്കുക.

You met ഉദ്ദേശിക (the dative) on nouns last lesson: അമ്മയ്ക്ക്, കുട്ടിക്ക്. Pronouns take it too, but the two commonest ones reshape their stem first: ഞാൻ becomes എനിക്ക്, നീ becomes നിനക്ക്. Don't look for the pronoun inside them — learn these two whole, the way you learned നമസ്കാരം.

ചില്ല് 'ൾ', 'ർ' ഉള്ള വാക്കുകൾക്ക് -ക്ക്: അവൾക്ക്, അവർക്ക്, നിങ്ങൾക്ക്, ഞങ്ങൾക്ക്. ചില്ല് 'ൻ' ഉള്ള വാക്കുകൾക്ക് -ന്: അവന്, ഇവന്, മകന്, അധ്യാപകന്.

After the chillus ൾ and ർ the ending is -ക്ക്: അവൾക്ക്, അവർക്ക്, നിങ്ങൾക്ക്, ഞങ്ങൾക്ക്. After the chillu ൻ the ending is the lighter -ന്: അവന്, ഇവന്, മകന്, അധ്യാപകന്. One irregular form worth having ready: നമ്മൾ gives നമുക്ക്, not the shape you would predict.

Look hard at അവൻ and അവന്. They are not the same word carelessly typed — they are two words. അവൻ ends in the chillu ൻ and means 'he'. അവന് ends in ന plus the candrakkala (the half-u) and means 'to him'. അവൻ വരുന്നു, he comes; അമ്മ അവന് പണം കൊടുക്കുന്നു, mother gives money to him. The dative also does the work of English 'have': എനിക്ക് കുട ഉണ്ട് — literally 'to me an umbrella exists'.

Think of five people in your house. Say one sentence aloud for each, using the dative of possession: അമ്മയ്ക്ക് ചായ ഉണ്ട്, അവന് പുസ്തകം ഉണ്ട്, എനിക്ക് ഫോൺ ഉണ്ട്. Then say the pair അവൻ … അവന് out loud twice, and write both by hand — the eye learns that difference faster than the ear does.
