വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

കൊടുക്കുന്നു — ഇവിടെ ആള് ഉണ്ട്, സാധനം ഉണ്ട്, പിന്നെ ഒരാൾ കൂടി ഉണ്ട്. ആ ആള് -ക്ക് വാൽ എടുക്കുന്നു: ഞാൻ അമ്മയ്ക്ക് സമ്മാനം കൊടുക്കുന്നു. ഈ വാൽ ആണ് ഉദ്ദേശിക.

A giving sentence has three people or things in it: the giver, the thing given and the one who gets it. The giver stays bare, the thing given stays bare, and the receiver takes the third tail, -ക്ക് — the ഉദ്ദേശിക. ഞാൻ അമ്മയ്ക്ക് സമ്മാനം കൊടുക്കുന്നു. The usual order is giver, receiver, thing, verb, with the verb last as always.

The joint is worth learning by eye. A noun ending in the vowel അ grows a യ and doubles the ക: അമ്മ becomes അമ്മയ്ക്ക്, മീര becomes മീരയ്ക്ക്. A noun ending in ഇ simply takes -ക്ക്: കുട്ടിക്ക്, ചേച്ചിക്ക്, മുത്തശ്ശിക്ക്. After the chillu ൾ nothing changes: മകൾക്ക്. In writing, അമ്മയ്ക്ക് with the യ is the standard spelling, even though you will hear it as if it were അമ്മക്ക്.

ൻ അവസാനം — വാൽ -ന് ആണ്: അച്ഛൻ → അച്ഛന്, മകൻ → മകന്, ചേട്ടൻ → ചേട്ടന്. ചോദ്യം: ആര് → ആർക്ക്. -ഉം ചേരുന്നു: അമ്മയ്ക്കും അച്ഛനും.

One group takes a different shape of the same tail: nouns ending in the chillu ൻ take -ന് instead of -ക്ക് — അച്ഛന്, മകന്, ചേട്ടന്. Look closely: അച്ഛൻ ends in the chillu, അച്ഛന് ends in ന plus the small ്. They are two different words, and the dot is the whole difference. The pronouns work the same way and get their own lesson next. The question word is ആർക്ക്, 'to whom', and -ഉം stacks on top as usual: അമ്മയ്ക്കും അച്ഛനും.

ഉപയോഗിക്കുക · Use it

ഓരോ ആൾക്കും ഓരോ സാധനം കൊടുക്കുക, ഉറക്കെ: ഞാൻ അമ്മയ്ക്ക് സമ്മാനം കൊടുക്കുന്നു. ഞാൻ മുത്തശ്ശിക്ക് മിഠായി കൊടുക്കുന്നു. ഞാൻ അച്ഛന് പണം കൊടുക്കുന്നു.

Picture a bag of presents and hand them out loud, one sentence per person: ഞാൻ അമ്മയ്ക്ക് സമ്മാനം കൊടുക്കുന്നു, ഞാൻ മുത്തശ്ശിക്ക് മിഠായി കൊടുക്കുന്നു, ഞാൻ അച്ഛന് പണം കൊടുക്കുന്നു. Then ask about each one — ആർക്ക്? — and answer with the receiver alone: ചേച്ചിക്ക്. That two-word answer is a whole natural sentence in Malayalam.
