അമ്മയെ വിളിക്കുന്നു

കുടുംബം

അനു — ദേവൻ, ഇവൻ ആര്?
Devan, who is he?
ദേവൻ — ഇവൻ എന്റെ മകൻ. ഇവൾ എന്റെ മകൾ.
He is my son. She is my daughter.
അനു — മുത്തശ്ശി എവിടെ?
Where is grandmother?
ദേവൻ — മുത്തശ്ശി ഇവിടെ ഉണ്ട്. മകൻ മുത്തശ്ശിയെ വിളിക്കുന്നു.
Grandmother is here. My son is calling her.
അനു — മകൾ ആരെ വിളിക്കുന്നു?
Whom is your daughter calling?
ദേവൻ — മകൾ അമ്മയെ വിളിക്കുന്നു, അച്ഛനെയും വിളിക്കുന്നു.
She is calling mother, and father too.
അനു — മുത്തശ്ശൻ ഉണ്ടോ?
Is grandfather here?
ദേവൻ — ഉവ്വ്. ഞാൻ മുത്തശ്ശനെ വിളിക്കുന്നു. ഇത് എന്റെ കുടുംബം.
Yes. I am calling him. This is my family.

വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

സാധനം -എ ഇല്ല, അതും ശരി. ആള് വേറെ: അമ്മയെ വിളിക്കുന്നു, മകനെ കാണുന്നു, മുത്തശ്ശിയെ കേൾക്കുന്നു. ഇവിടെ -എ നിർബന്ധം.

Last lesson the tail was optional; here it is not. When the object is a person — or an animal — the -എ must be there: ഞാൻ അമ്മയെ വിളിക്കുന്നു, never ഞാൻ അമ്മ വിളിക്കുന്നു. Leaving it off does not sound casual, it sounds wrong, and it can flip the meaning: അമ്മ വിളിക്കുന്നു means mother is the one doing the calling.

ക്രിയ ആരെയും കാണിക്കുന്നില്ല. വിളിക്കുന്നു — ഇത് ഒരു രൂപം മാത്രം. ഇവിടെ -എ വാൽ ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്നു.

Now you see why. A Malayalam verb never records who is acting: വിളിക്കുന്നു is the same word for ഞാൻ, for അവൾ and for അവർ. So the verb cannot tell you which of two people in the sentence is the caller and which is the called. The -എ does that work, and with two human beings standing side by side the language cannot spare it.

ചില്ല് അഴിയുന്നു: അച്ഛൻ → അച്ഛനെ, മകൻ → മകനെ, മുത്തശ്ശൻ → മുത്തശ്ശനെ, മകൾ → മകളെ. സ്വരം അവസാനം — യ വരുന്നു: അമ്മ → അമ്മയെ, മുത്തശ്ശി → മുത്തശ്ശിയെ, കുട്ടി → കുട്ടിയെ. ആര് → ആരെ.

Watch the spelling. A chillu is a bare consonant, and before the tail it opens back into a full letter: അച്ഛൻ becomes അച്ഛനെ, മകൻ becomes മകനെ, and മകൾ becomes മകളെ. A noun ending in a vowel takes a യ glide first: അമ്മ becomes അമ്മയെ, മുത്തശ്ശി becomes മുത്തശ്ശിയെ. The question word does it too — ആര് becomes ആരെ, 'whom'. And -ഉം can ride on top of the tail: അച്ഛനെയും വിളിക്കുന്നു.

അഭ്യാസം · Practice

ശരിയായ വാക്യം ഏത്? Which sentence says 'I am calling mother'?
മകൾ + എ = ? Add the object ending to മകൾ.
മകൾ ________ കാണുന്നു. (അച്ഛൻ) The daughter sees her father.
വാക്യം ഉണ്ടാക്കുക — 'I am calling grandmother.' Arrange the words.
ചേർത്തു വായിക്കുക. Match the word to its meaning.

ഉപയോഗിക്കുക · Use it

സ്വന്തം കുടുംബം പറയുക: ഞാൻ അമ്മയെ വിളിക്കുന്നു. ഞാൻ അച്ഛനെ കാണുന്നു. ഞാൻ മുത്തശ്ശിയെ കേൾക്കുന്നു. പിന്നെ പേരുകൾ ചേർക്കുക — ഞാൻ മീരയെ വിളിക്കുന്നു.

Name four people in your own family and say what you do to each of them, out loud: ഞാൻ അമ്മയെ വിളിക്കുന്നു, ഞാൻ അച്ഛനെ കാണുന്നു. Then swap in real names and let the tail attach to them the same way — മീര becomes മീരയെ, ദേവൻ becomes ദേവനെ, അനു becomes അനുവിനെ. A name is a person, so it always takes the tail.
