It is this paper I am reading. There is a picture here — a child is picking up a toy.
ദേവൻ — ശരി, ഞാനും ചിത്രം കാണുന്നു.
Right, I see the picture too.

വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

മീര പത്രം വായിക്കുന്നു. ഇവിടെ ആള് മീര, സാധനം പത്രം. സാധനം -എ വാൽ എടുക്കുന്നു: പുസ്തകം → പുസ്തകത്തെ, പേന → പേനയെ, ചിത്രം → ചിത്രത്തെ, കത്ത് → കത്തിനെ. ഈ വാൽ ആണ് പ്രതിഗ്രാഹിക.

The second tail is -എ, the പ്രതിഗ്രാഹിക, and it marks the thing acted on — the object. പുസ്തകം becomes പുസ്തകത്തെ, പേന becomes പേനയെ, ചിത്രം becomes ചിത്രത്തെ, കത്ത് becomes കത്തിനെ. Notice the joints doing their quiet work: a ം-final noun grows ത്ത്, a vowel-final noun grows a യ glide, and കത്ത് grows ഇൻ.

-എ നിർബന്ധം അല്ല. ദിവസവും നമ്മൾ പറയുന്നു: ഞാൻ പത്രം വായിക്കുന്നു. ഞാൻ പേന എടുക്കുന്നു. ഞാൻ കത്ത് എഴുതുന്നു. ഇത് ശരി ആണ്.

Here is the good news: with things, -എ is optional, and the everyday sentence leaves it off. ഞാൻ പത്രം വായിക്കുന്നു is what a Malayali actually says. So you have not been speaking badly for two levels — bare objects are correct Malayalam.

-എ എപ്പോൾ ചേരുന്നു? സാധനം ഏത് എന്ന് തീർച്ച ആണ്: ഈ പത്രത്തെ ഞാൻ വായിക്കുന്നു. ആള്, മൃഗം — ഇവിടെ -എ നിർബന്ധം. അത് അടുത്ത പാഠം.

You add -എ when the thing is a particular, definite one that both of you have in mind — ഈ പത്രത്തെ ഞാൻ വായിക്കുന്നു, 'it is this paper I am reading' — or when the object has been moved away from its verb and the sentence would otherwise be hard to read. The rule of thumb: the tail is for clarity and emphasis, not for grammar's sake. With people and animals it stops being optional altogether, and that is the next lesson.

പദങ്ങൾ · Vocabulary

പദം Meaning കുറിപ്പ് · Note
പേന pen പേനയെ with the object tail
കത്ത് letter (written) കത്തിനെ — an ഇൻ joint appears
ചിത്രം picture ചിത്രത്തെ
പത്രം newspaper പത്രത്തെ
കളിപ്പാട്ടം toy കളി play plus പാട്ടം; note the double ട്ട

അഭ്യാസം · Practice

പുസ്തകം + എ = ? Add the object ending to പുസ്തകം.
ദിവസവും നമ്മൾ പറയുന്നു — ഏത് വാക്യം? Which sentence is the everyday one?
ഞാൻ ഈ ________ കാണുന്നു. (ചിത്രം + എ) I am looking at this particular picture.
വാക്യം ഉണ്ടാക്കുക — 'I am writing a letter.' Arrange the words.
ചേർത്തു വായിക്കുക. Match the word to its meaning.

ഉപയോഗിക്കുക · Use it

നാലു വാക്യം ഉറക്കെ പറയുക: ഞാൻ പത്രം വായിക്കുന്നു. ഞാൻ കത്ത് എഴുതുന്നു. ഞാൻ പേന എടുക്കുന്നു. കുട്ടി കളിപ്പാട്ടം എടുക്കുന്നു. പിന്നെ ഒരു വാക്യം -എ ചേർത്തു പറയുക: ഈ പുസ്തകത്തെ ഞാൻ വായിക്കുന്നു.

Say the four bare-object sentences aloud first — that is the normal register and you should be fluent in it. Then look at one thing in the room, point at it, and say the marked version: ഈ പുസ്തകത്തെ ഞാൻ വായിക്കുന്നു, ഈ ചിത്രത്തെ ഞാൻ കാണുന്നു. Feel the difference: the tail says 'this one, the one we are both looking at.'
