Right! കുട്ടി, സ്കൂൾ, പുസ്തകം — there is no tail here. We are going to learn the tail of a word.

വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

ഒരു വാക്ക്, ഒരു ചെറിയ വാൽ, ഒരു പുതിയ ജോലി — ഇത് ആണ് വിഭക്തി. വാക്ക് ഒന്നുതന്നെ; വാൽ മാത്രം പുതിയത്.

English shows a noun's job with word order and little words in front of it — to the child, of the child, with the child. Malayalam glues a short piece onto the end of the noun instead: കുട്ടിക്ക്, കുട്ടിയുടെ, കുട്ടിയോട്. That piece is a വിഭക്തി, a case ending — one word, a small tail, a new job. The word itself does not change; only the tail arrives.

ഇതുവരെ വാൽ ഇല്ല: കുട്ടി പഠിക്കുന്നു. അധ്യാപകൻ വരുന്നു. വിദ്യാർഥി പുസ്തകം വായിക്കുന്നു. ഈ രൂപം ആണ് നിർദ്ദേശിക. ആര് ചെയ്യുന്നു — അത് നിർദ്ദേശിക കാണിക്കുന്നു.

For twenty-five lessons every noun has stood bare, with no tail at all: കുട്ടി പഠിക്കുന്നു, അധ്യാപകൻ വരുന്നു. That bare form is not a missing case — it is a case, the നിർദ്ദേശിക, and its job is to name the doer. You already own it. This matters more in Malayalam than in most languages, because the verb tells you nothing about who is acting: പഠിക്കുന്നു is the same word whether one child or a hundred teachers are studying. The doer has to be said.

വാലുകൾ ഇവയാണ്: കുട്ടിയെ, കുട്ടിയോട്, കുട്ടിക്ക്, കുട്ടിയാൽ, കുട്ടിയുടെ, കുട്ടിയിൽ. ഒരു പാഠം, ഒരു വാൽ.

Here is the whole set, on one word, so you can see it once before we take it apart: കുട്ടിയെ (the child, as the one acted on) · കുട്ടിയോട് (to the child, in speaking) · കുട്ടിക്ക് (for or to the child) · കുട്ടിയാൽ (by the child) · കുട്ടിയുടെ (the child's) · കുട്ടിയിൽ (in the child). Each one gets its own lesson — one lesson, one tail. Notice also that nouns ending in ം grow a small joint before a tail: പുസ്തകം becomes പുസ്തകത്തിൽ, not പുസ്തകംഇൽ.

അഭ്യാസം · Practice

ഏത് രൂപം ആണ് നിർദ്ദേശിക? Which of these is the bare form, the one that names the doer?
'അധ്യാപകൻ പുസ്തകം വായിക്കുന്നു.' — ഇവിടെ ആര് ചെയ്യുന്നു? In this sentence, who is doing the reading?
വിദ്യാർഥി ________ വായിക്കുന്നു. The student reads a book.
വാക്യം ഉണ്ടാക്കുക — 'The teacher reads a book.' Arrange the words.
ചേർത്തു വായിക്കുക. Match the word to its meaning.

ഉപയോഗിക്കുക · Use it

അഞ്ചു വാക്യം ഉറക്കെ പറയുക: കുട്ടി പഠിക്കുന്നു. അധ്യാപകൻ വരുന്നു. വിദ്യാർഥി പുസ്തകം വായിക്കുന്നു. ഇവിടെ സ്കൂൾ ഉണ്ട്. ഞാൻ വിദ്യാർഥി ആണ്.

Say those five sentences aloud, and notice what you are doing: every noun is bare, and every one of them is the നിർദ്ദേശിക. Then take one word — your own name — and put it in the doer slot: ഞാൻ വിദ്യാർഥി ആണ്, followed by your name. From the next lesson on, the tails start arriving one at a time.
