വിശദീകരണം · Explanation

'ഉറങ്ങുക' — ഇത് പ്രവൃത്തി. 'ഉറക്കം' — ഇത് പേര്. 'ഞാൻ ഉറങ്ങുന്നു.' 'ഉറക്കം വരുന്നു.' ഒരേ വേര്, വേറെ രൂപം.

ഉറങ്ങുക is the verb, 'to sleep'; ഉറക്കം is the noun, 'sleep' — the same root wearing two coats. This is your first sight of a pattern Malayalam uses constantly: a verb, and a noun made from it. Notice ഉറക്കം വരുന്നു, literally 'sleep is coming' — that is the everyday way to say you are getting sleepy, and the sleepy person is not even mentioned.

'സ്വപ്നം കാണുന്നു' — മലയാളത്തിൽ സ്വപ്നം കാണുന്നു, സ്വപ്നം ചെയ്യുന്നു അല്ല. 'അവൾ സ്വപ്നം കാണുന്നു.'

Malayalam sees a dream: സ്വപ്നം കാണുന്നു, using കാണുക from the seeing-and-hearing lesson. There is no separate verb 'to dream'. Say അവൾ സ്വപ്നം കാണുന്നു, ഞാൻ സ്വപ്നം കാണുന്നു — and, as always, the verb is the same for both.

'കട്ടിൽ' — വാതിൽ, ജനൽ പോലെ ചില്ല് 'ൽ' അവസാനം. 'വിളക്ക്' അവസാനം ചെറിയ 'ക്ക്' — സംവൃതോകാരം, അത്, ഉണ്ട് പോലെ.

കട്ടിൽ ends in the chillu ൽ, like വാതിൽ and ജനൽ from the house lesson — never write കട്ടില്. വിളക്ക്, on the other hand, ends in the small closed vowel you have been writing since അത് and ഉണ്ട്. Two different endings, and Malayalam keeps them apart carefully.
